Walk scores just started being listed on the home listings here and it does come in handy. But the walk score for my home is 78% percent which seems sort of high because it's not to coffee shops, boutiques etc. Downtown is a mile and we bike down there often but we don't walk down there much.
I like it to be through residential and not on busy streets. I want it to be enjoyable not stressful.
For us we have a couple resturants and Jack's school all withing 6 blocks through neighborhoods. Downtown is about a mile away and again can be accessed through residential streets.
We have a 1/4 mile walk to the elementary school, a 1/2 mile walk to two different parks/playgrounds, and a mile walk to the center of town, all through a residential area with sidewalks, and I consider those walking distance, although the walk to town is pushing it. It becomes more like walking for exercise than just walking to grab a bite to eat. We drive much more often than we walk.
eta: Like eddy, our walk score is only 60, but I think that is an underestimate. I walk a mile and can hit the post office, a coffee shop, great restaurants, a movie theater, and the Gap. lol.
I find the score thing to be kinds BS. MIL's house scores higher than ours, but. It is big busy seems around there and super ugly. Our house (same city. Different area) is a short enough walk to the lake, beautiful village, schools, stores, etc. and walking distance to the train. We spent our first 4 years here with just one car. I take the train to work, bike to a lot of places, walk to restUrNts,etc.
Really everything is within a 15 minute walk or can be done through PT.
Now after I have been going on and on about how great our place is it only got a 60 walkable score lololol. But I don't see our elementary or the little shops we go to on the list so it isn't considering everything.. Whatever website I think it is very walkable. You don't know my lyfe!

2 miles. But that's only if I can walk in a residential area for most of the trip and not on busy-ass streets. I walk two miles pushing the stroller on the weekends to get a coffee and the kids a cookie, then we walk back, but it's through our neighborhood and two cute downtowns.

lol that is pretty much what happened to me, and I was like, shutup! You can't rate shit!
Okay looking at the website it looks like I lied. There is a Peet's and a Starbucks 1/2 mile from us but I don't like the walking route there and never do it.
I walk anywhere that is w/in 2 miles. That includes 6 different playgrounds, Starbucks, WF, my gym, and the downtown of our area that has restaurants and small stores. I love walking places, I dread when it gets too cold for comfort. Even my girls prefer a 40 minute walk in the stroller to 5 minutes in the car.
