What are 8 year-olds into these days? We drew names for nieces/nephews and happened to get our 8 year old twin niece and nephew. I know nephew was very into Legos a year ago but has also received many for gifts. Niece is 8 going on 16. She's super picky about clothes and accessories. But she's also very much a girly girl. Budget is $50 each. Any ideas? Thanks!
My soon-to-be-eight year old girl is super into American Girl this year. Also certain clothes (but yes, getting picky and I can't always guess what she will like), Playmobil & Lego. Games and art stuff, too. Magnatiles. Calico Critters. She's very imaginative and still likes to play with little toys.
She and her five year old brother also both seems interested in science and magic trick kits. They both are interested in music things, too, like kid accordions and ukuleles.
Robots seem to be popular with DS and his friends this year. He is getting this Meccano Micronoid from my sister this year. You build the robot and then program it to do different things.
Besides Legos, DS also loves remote control cars/trucks, Snap Circuits (we are giving him the RC Rover this year), and spy gear right now.
My DD is almost 8 and seems like a mini teen sometimes.
She like Calico Critters, Little Live Pets (basically stuffed animals that do stuff), Barbies, anything animal or vet related, Legos and drawing/art stuff
She also likes pretty much anything from Justice as it relates to clothing, jewelry, makeup.
According to DD the boys in her class like Legos, Minecraft, Captain Underpants and Angry Birds.

DS is 8 and loves Minecraft and his kindle. He's getting a snap circuit set for Christmas this year (the arcade set) because he likes DD1's so much. He also loves UA clothes, sports of any kind, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.
My DD is 8 and is really into clothes. Justice, Abercrombie Kids and Old Navy are my go-to's for her. She actually asked Santa for vests this year. From us/family, she's getting books (Pet Diaries series), nerf gun, walkie talkies, scarves, and shoes.
For boys, I feel like you can't go wrong with video games, nerf guns, or sports jerseys if they're into sports.

My 8 yr old son still loves playing with his Legos. He also enjoys watching tv & movies - Lego based movies (Jurassic World Indominus Escape, Ninjago, Lego Batman), Cupcake Wars, Zootopia, Scoobydoo (the new one). He loves drawing and making up little story books, loves using crafting scissors and construction paper. He really enjoys the Clash of Clans app game, which he plays with his dad. He loves to play XBox - Marvel Superheros, Zoo Tycoon, Disney Universe, Lego Batman.
DD1 is 8 and loves American Girl stuff, if she likes that you can get her an AG magazine subscription. Lego Friends, she wants the roller coaster set for Christmas and Barbies.
She loves experiment and arts and crafts kits.
Chapter books, I can give you recs if you want.
She loves clothes and is in an athletic wear phase. Old Navy active, Gap Fit and Athleta Girl are here favorite.
There is also a huge trend in her grade of getting keychains with charms or mini stuffed animals/emojis to clip on their backpacks.

Thanks, all! I just looked at the Fat Brain website and found some cool options. For nephew, a solar powered robot and book of Impossible Objects. For niece, a book creator (she loves to read and wants to be an author) and a game. Thanks for the ideas!
My 8 year old daughter got a microscope and telescope last year and loved both - we got her new slides for the microscope this year. She also loves all arts/crafts things, fun t shirts (like her Schuyler sister one, future president, etc), playbobile, calico critters, tsum tsums.
The boys I know that age all love Star Wars & legos.
