San Antonio is really pretty, and the people are super nice y'all.
Our hotel was great and had a beautiful courtyard and pool, and a Mr. and Mrs. Peacock roaming the gardens. I booked with points for a room with a view and when they put us in a room with a parking lot view they were very gracious about changing our location. The restaurant was very good, we had breakfast there twice and a snack at the pool one day.
Thursday night we just went to the Riverwalk close by, Durty Nellie's was the only thing open (they roll the sidewalks up early there) and the piano player was not unpleasant so we had some draft Shiner Bocks (which may or may not have given us both green poop the next morning - when we tried it bottled the same phenomenon did not occur). We met a lovely couple from Dallas and wound up hanging out and chatting with them for a while and then they let me use their bathroom because we got locked out of the bar (their hotel was right there).
Friday we went to the Alamo, which we really enjoyed and then we went back to the hotel for a swim and a nap (hubba hubba). We had dinner at the most amazing place called La Gloria up in the King Edward neighborhood. There was live music outside, the drinks were incredible and I had a hard time not licking the tomatillo sauce off of one of our plates. We had ceviche, quesadilla with pork rinds, chicken tacos with tomatillos and crema and a sopa with mole chicken on it. Everything was outstanding and then we sat outside watching the river and listening to the music. www.lagloriaicehouse.com/
Then we went to The Esquire Tavern which is probably my new favorite place on Earth. The drinks menu is astounding, all of the mixers are all natural and homemade and they use all kinds of infusions and bitters and simple syrups. I had to start with the "I Love Tiny Dancer", of course (shoutout to moe!!!) The bartenders were lovely, the atmosphere rich and the music excellent. It was a perfect way to cap off the night. www.esquiretavern-sa.com/
Saturday morning we did our bit for the local economy. I got a straw cowboy hat with embroidered leather on it and Nigel got a belt buckle with a lucky horseshoe on it. My hat was a big hit at the ranch party, several ladies complimented me on it so I was pleased that I had chosen well, lol.
The "ranch" was so nice and the scenery beautiful and there must have been like 150 people at the party. Catered barbecue and a DJ and everything. It was great to catch up with Nigel's family (his cousin's kids had flown in) and it was so nice to finally meet his cousin's wife's family and see where she came from. We wound up crashing there for the night and then spending most of the next day with about 20 of us hanging out around the pool.
A friend drove us back Sunday evening and then we went to Rosario's in Southtown. Also good, but nothing special IMO. It was close and we were so exhausted after basically partying for 24 hours. We had to get up at 5am to make our flight out.
I feel like there is so much more to see, and I wouldn't hesitate to return. Very hospitable and I still have like 10 restaurants that I want to try!!
Thanks to everyone for the recs, much appreciated. Jules I feel like I owe you a drink for recommending the Esquire, omg. LOVED IT.
