Until recently, many scientists believed that exercise reduces the body’s ability to fight off infections. Past studies had found, for example, that after workouts, especially strenuous ones, people had fewer infection-fighting white blood cells in their bloodstreams than before working out, suggesting that their immune response had been weakened.
But a timely new review of studies about exercise and immunity indicates that the interactions between exercise and immunity are far more intricate than scientists once suspected. Some types of workouts may hinder the immune response, according to the review, while others bolster it. Encouragingly, it also seems that a few simple precautions, including consuming carbohydrates during exhausting workouts, might help to keep our immune systems robust.
I wish everyone would stop hating on carbs. You need them to function. Your BRAIN needs them to function. You can't live on protein and fats alone. GOOD carbs are necessary.
sadlebred, they also had an article up entitled Can you get too much protein? and this was in the middle of that:
“People think carbs are the enemy, protein is your friend,” said Eleanor Dwyer, a research analyst with the firm, and “that any health concerns are overblown.”
Experts note, however, that there is only so much protein the body can use. “The body only digests and absorbs a certain amount of protein at every meal,” about 20 to 40 grams, said Jim White, a registered dietitian and exercise physiologist who spoke on behalf of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “People think that if they fill up with protein, it will be a magic bullet, whether for weight loss or to get in better shape and build muscle — but that’s not proving to be true.”
My friend just went to a basically no carb diet. I think veggies are his only source? He was complaining to me yesterday that he's exhausted, his runs suck and he's struggling with lifting. I was like, yeah...carbs are your friend dude.

I mean, I'm seriously carb restricted because of my stupid body's betrayal, and while I don't usually miss them, I know enough to know that I can only go so far.
This is very interesting!! I am one that drinks carbs/protein during CF workouts. I can't recall a time I've been sick since I started last year. My entire house can be sick but somehow I manage to ward it off. Then again I'm the only one that is active so maybe that's why. I'm going to start paying attention now. H and I always joke that I have a super immune system because of all the crap that was pumped into me while I was in the military. I say it was the anthrax vaccine.
I actually do really well eating very low carb, when not training for a marathon. I think it's really individual and putting blanket statements on it is not helpful *shrug*
Then again, I did not get sick all this summer eating very high carb and last week I had a cold
