I'm taking Friday off just to see it. Then I'm going again with H and the boys on Saturday. I will probably also go at least once more by myself or with a friend in the next couple of weeks.
For months I've been saying that I'm more excited for Rogue One than I am for Episode VIII, and last night DS 1 finally asked why. I told him that it's because I was a huge Star Wars fan as a kid, but that I never really cared very much about the Skywalkers or the Force. I liked Han, I liked Wedge, I liked the ordinary-ish people who did extraordinary things; the only problem is that none of them were girls. Jyn Erso is the heroine I've wanted for almost thirty years, and I am SO excited to experience her movie.
It was great. Loved it. While The Force Awakens was meant to appeal to everyone, I think Rogue One was made specifically for fans of Star Wars.
I completely agree. I really enjoyed it, but I can't say that I'd recommend it to somebody who isn't a fan. It felt more like one of the novels in the sense that there was no exposition surrounding most of the cameos; the audience was just expected to know who these characters were and how they fit into what had come before and what was yet to come. dr.girlfriend,same. I like to preview movies like this one before taking the kids. I know my kids will like it, but it might be a bit too intense for them and the ending will likely make them really sad.
SO and I really wanted to see it together, but he was headed home to spend Christmas with his parents in Brazil right after our Antarctica trip. That only left us one day together in Buenos Aires to try to see it unless we waited until after Christmas! I was worried it would sell out, since it was opening weekend in Argentina, so I emailed the hotel before we left to see if they could get us tickets. They came through and reserved some for us (though it turned out to be a non-issue, because it was barely half full).
I think that overall I like it more than Episode VII. EpVII was a ton of fun, but as a film, I felt like it was extremely similar to EpIV. In some ways Rogue One seemed more original. Unique characters and locations that were significantly different from IV-VII, and a bit more realism. I liked that the rebellion wasn't just a shiny collection of flawless white knights. To that extent, it felt a bit more like Empire (including the down ending), which is my favorite by far.
