This year the was giving the hourly people the pay on Friday and we work Monday.

At my dad's work, if the holiday is not on a work day, too bad, so sad.

My current employer is open on January 2. I'm surprised, usually we observe it on the closest weekday, but this year, there is no mention of it being observed at all. We are closed 12/23-1/1, so theoretically it's being observed one of those days.

My soon-to-be employer is closed on 1/2. However, I don't actually start until 1/9, so it doesn't affect me this year.

Yes, and we get 12/23 off, which surprised me because the company shuts down completely for the week between Xmas and New Years. So we get 7 work days off instead of 5.

Yes. My office is closed. It actually kind of sucks, because my kid goes back to school on the 2nd. I'd much rather get the Friday off so I can hang out with my kid before he goes back to school.

Reason for this post: my boss, coworker, and I are debating it. Remember that my CW and I own part of the business so we get a say in these decisions. Our official policy is that we give a day for New Years Day, but my boss is saying that it's on a Sunday so he doesn't want to. He wants to "float" the holiday and pick a day in the year when we really need a three day weekend (it's an 8 person company, we can sort of do that kind of thing). I think he's being dumb. I'm about to go out for a drink with him, so I think I'll bitch some more and tell him my internet friends get that day off

Yes, the 1st is a statutory holiday here. Since it falls on a weekend, we get the next business day off. (Then I get the 3rd off because my flex day is supposed to be the 2nd.)

  We have this policy at my current job. I have worked other places where weekend holidays mean you get extra personal days to make you "whole" for the 9 or so paid holidays.

Yes I get the 2nd. However, I work at a cancer center, so I am actually a little surprised that they don't have some kind of plan to be open for at least the patients who are on fairly strict chemo regimens - but I guess this would be the same as any other holiday that falls during the work week. There are only 6 holidays where we are closed for business throughout the year.

Yes. But special snow flake because we legally have to get a certain number of public/statutory holiday days off work so if a certain holiday falls on a weekend in my province then it is mandatory that we get the Monday off or Friday off.

If the official policy is that you observe the New Years federal holiday, then that day is 1/2/17. I'd encourage him to stick with the policy. No one wants to work a full week that week, plus if anyone has kids, they'd have to scramble for childcare if they were expecting the day off.

This is me, exactly. I am so in love with compressed schedules and Monday holidays. It's the one thing the Feds do right. lol
