If you were doing something for kindergartners, what age would you specify?
I took my son to a kids night out at our gym last night, and the lady in charge almost did not let him stay due to age/grade although it was probably his fourth time in attendance. I'll update with their specifics after a few replies.
Update: OK, thank you. All of their flyers say it is for ages 4-12. He is closer to 5 than 4, but she tried turning him away saying they had to be in elementary school. After I commented that he had been there before, they had his info on file, and the paperwork did not state that, they finally let him stay. I didn't think there were really any 4 year olds in kindy
My state is one of the few that allows 4 year olds to start kindergarten. They just have to turn 5 on or before December 31 and no one really red shirts around here.
So here? 4-5. But that isnt true of many states. We moved here from the DC area where Kindergarten was definitely 5-6.

Depends. Some states have a late November or even December cutoff so there are kids who are 4 for half the year. My son has a September birthday and started at 4.

Our summer camps and other activities often specify that they start at "age 6 and has finished kindergarten" or something similarly specific, just so that they don't run into the kind of issue that you described.
I can't wait until DD2 hits age 7, then we can do kids' night out at our local rec center.
Yeah, 4 isn't elementary school!! Not in my area. you have to be 5. So for the flyers to say "4" but then they say you have to be in school - conflicting info there.
I started Kindergarten at 4 because my birthday is the end of November and then I was 5. I was always one of the youngest in my class. So average age is 5?
Both of my kids were 3 on the first day of elementary school.
Your kids started kindergarten when they were 3? Or is elementary school considered preschool where you live?
Kindergarten is a two year program now in Ontario. It's full day. First year is junior kindergarten second year is senior kindergarten. Junior kindergarten starts at 4 but the cut off is December 31st. Our school, like most in my area are k-8.
Kindly here is play-based. They don't have worksheets or homework or anything like that. Sight words don't start until grade one.

Where I just moved from converted an old elementary school into a preschool and it's part of the school system, so "school age" is as young as 3. Kindergarten you have to be 5 by a certain cut off, so 5.
They need to change the flyer if they don't want 4 year olds, though I expect that would cause backlash because they've been allowing them up to this point.

4-6 is the age I think of kindergarten depending on how birthdays fall. The area I live in apparently keeps their kids back late because the moms in my group seemed shocked I plan to send my July baby at 5. They said she would be the youngest and should be held back a year... I have no plans to do that if she is ready which I would expect at 5.

I would have guessed 5-6. Our town and surrounding towns have a Jan 1 cutoff so this time of year, most should be 5 by now. Or turning 5 in a couple weeks.
My friends daughter is in 1st grade and is turning 6 on NYE!
