Has anyone on this board cancelled cable/tv? We have direct tv, which we love, but it's pretty expensive. I'm doing a week free trial of hulu and they have a lot of the shows I watch for only $11.99 or $7.99 with commercials. I typically use Netflix but I could also easily have both for way cheaper than cable. Thoughts?
We thought about it. When we moved it was cheaper to keep cable in a double play package with Internet than have internet only. Just double checked this week and to keep our current level internet only would actually cost us $8 more a month if we ditched cable.
So for now, we'll keep cable. We don't have a DVR though. And I mostly watch via Hulu and Netflix . Hulu I get for free via my swagbucks and my mom pays for the family Netflix account we share. I could live cutting cable if it meant we would actually save money on the cable bill.
We did, for about two and a half years. We didn't have any issues, until Hulu started acting super glitchy and wouldn't let us get through a single episode of anything. We spent months trying to troubleshoot it with no success, and eventually ended up going back to cable.
MrsAggie- autocorrect always changes that for me too. Lol
We haven't had cable for a while. We got it on a promotional price around the summer olympics and canceled it once that olympics were over. I've never tried hula but Netflix is enough for us.
grover- I think it's so weird when companies charge less for cable and internet then for just one of them.
DH and I went for a walk tonight. It was so nice out, it's sad that I'm saying it's so nice out as it was 27F. Lol but it's been closer to 0-10F for the past 2-3 weeks.
We cut cable almost 2 years ago. We have the Amazon Fire box with Prime, Netflix and Hulu. We subscribe to HBO Now when GoT is on. I love it! I only miss sports really. But we're saving over $100/month so it's worth it.
I will say we do use our parents logins for things like HGTV and Food Network so we can still watch those but we don't use those often. I figure ILs use our Netflix and our parents are paying for it regardless. Without those logins I think we'd still be just fine, I just wouldn't be able to watch sports at all then (I watch baseball and hockey occasionally on the Fox Sports app).
We went without cable for several months when it wasn't available at our new house. It wasn't bad. Of course we were without internet as well so it would be much easier if we had access to Netflix and whatnot. We will be cutting cable now to save money.
Every time both the girls are asleep I struggle with should I do something productive or take a couple minutes of me time. This time I chose coffee and internet. I'll get some laundry going too so I'm still being somewhat productive.

Honestly I'm not happy with either. We moved and our new cable provider doesn't give us 2 of the stations I watch, for shows that don't play anywhere eles, Logo and BBC America. I pay the 5.99 for Hulu, but even then I still don't get 1/2 the shows I like to watch. I just watch Hulu at work, lol.

We haven't had cable in years. We use an over the air antenna and get local channels. I don't watch tv but DH does.
bk1- I have the same struggle. I try to balance my time when L is sleeping between being productive and spending time with C...then when they both sleep I usually take that time for me (which is rare because L is very hot or miss on his naps and I usually go to bed when he does since he doesn't sleep much).
Rough night last night, way too many wakeups. I need to walk to Starbucks to get a gift card at some point today. DH needs to take his car to the body shop and might not be home until the kids are in bed. Good news is it's supposed to be low 70s today!

Let me tell you how I'm spending my morning. H asked me for some inexpensive stocking stuffer ideas. I'm stuck on a 4 hour phone meeting, so I'm stalking those of you I'm friends with on Pinterest to steal ideas from your wish lists.
We did. We're using Playstation Vue through our Fire TV. It's like $25/month. We get most of the sports channels, and the ESPN and CBS sports apps on Fire TV fill in the gaps.
We also have Netflix and Prime. No hulu yet. We add HBO Go in the spring for GoT, and the Starz app in the spring for Outlander and Black Sails.
grover You're kind of a genius (/I'm an airhead). Direct tv + internet was $230/month. That is absolutely insane to me. H signed up for bs because it was x amount of months free but then forgot to cancel. Since our direct tv contract ended almost 2 years ago I can cancel and switch to cable for only $5/month more than internet alone is costing. I'm sure there will be a fee for DVR too but we should still be able to save $100+/month. GENIUS.
bk1 and luv2rn4fun I agree with you on the personal time. It's been a rough month with DS2 so I'm lucky if I get 2-3 hours of downtime in the afternoon. Some days he doesn't get a solid nap and nurses or fusses constantly. I'm tired and tell myself I should go to sleep early but when I'm finally able to get both boys down then I like being able to watch some tv or go on the internet. Sanity is important too right? We won't even talk about the state of my house right now.
MrsAggie at one point a few years ago when I called to ask about better deals Comcast pissed me off and said they'd only talk to my husband even though both names were on the account. That night I went and signed up for DirecTV bc I was pissed. The initial deal wasnt bad, but when we moved Comcast Internet was our only option and that's when I figured it was cheaper to have internet and cable than just internet. We did ditch the DVR to save the $15 a month, and only have cable hooked up on one TV to save $5 per TV. But I don't really miss the DVR any more with on demand.
I'm going to look into these other options too. H's biggest concern is being able to watch football and that's really important to me too.
That was our biggest concern too and it really hasn't been an issue. Baseball has been more of an issue than football. DH watches all the Cowboys and Aggie games he wants. We even have NFL Redzone channel on Sundays.
