When I was in Maui I went to a jewelry store and they harvested pearls right from the oyster and I got one. It was cool when it happened but I honestly never wear the necklace.
I hate it. I hate everything. I'm going to live in a yurt.
Oooooh you fancy. So it's just a supersized over priced tent you can stand up in? If it had a bouncy house floor it might be more interested. $8,309 to still live outside? No thank you.

Don't talk like that about my future hermit abode.

A coworker was telling me about this and I don't understand the appeal. I wouldn't want to buy something if I don't know what I'm going to get. And then on top of having to buy the oyster, then you have to pick and purchase a setting for the pearl (I guess that part could be optional, but who would want a loose pearl). With my luck I would end up with some deformed nasty colored pearl.

I have no clue what you're talking about but I love buying the pearls from oysters at those tourist places. It's fun to see what color and size pearl you get.
My mom held one of these parties when I was a teenager 20 odd years ago. I got the largest white pearl of the evening, my mom got a decent sized black pearl, and a friend of hers got tiny twin pearls, and everyone else got smallish white pearls. The oysters were stupid cheap, and the person selling the pearls/settings made most of her money off the settings. It was like Pampered Chef but with oysters. LOL!
I don't remember it smelling at all. The lady shucking the oysters and squishing out the pearls just had a couple of big tubs, one with the oysters, and one for the shells, and she took everything with her when she left. It was definitely weird, but I remember everyone having fun, and cheering when the lady got the twin pearls.

I love opening oysters for pearls. I did an at home one and do one every time I'm on vacation and see a stand. It's fascinating and I love not knowing what kind of pearl I'll get.
They have a stand/counter where you can do this in a shop in Japan in EPCOT. I find it fascinating for a few minutes and then wander off.
We did this at Disney the last time we were there! It was only like $15 each I think?
N picked her oyster and it had two black pearls in it. The guy who opened it was pretty excited, definitely more so that the regular fanfare we had watched before deciding to do it. He told us that black pearls are rare, and double black pears are even more so. I have no idea if that's true, but the kids had fun and got their first "real" jewelry from it (that part was extra). we had n's made into earrings, and e got a necklace.
But I think I would keep it as a novelty experience. I haven't seen it on my FB yet, but I'm sure it's coming.
