I've been getting a sniffly nose after every swim for a while. It usually goes away after a day. Yesterday was absolutely awful. Sinus pressure, sniffly nose, sneezing. It started on the way home from the pool so I'm convinced it is pool related. I had a sneezing fit and could barely drive. Then all day long, I was blowing my nose until it was raw.
This morning I was a little congested but feeling better. Now I'm feeling fine.
What is going on here? I had something similar happen a few weeks ago (not as bad). This didn't happen until a month or two ago when the weather started getting colder. Am I allergic to my pool? Would nose plugs help?
1. What do folks use to wash their swim stuff? I swear, it smells more like chlorine after washing with sports laundry detergent than before it goes in.
2. I have speedo goggles, and they always fog up about 100 yards into my swim. Any suggestions?

You can spit in them before your swim or @mystic muffin got me some liquid spit that works pretty well as well.

1. I don't. It's swim stuff, it's gonna smell like chlorine. There's no avoiding it. I just hang it up on a drying rack after practice to dry.
2. Baby shampoo! Regular old J&J works great. It's cheap, easy to find, and works great. Put a drop in, smear it around the inside of the lenses, do a quick rinse, and put them on. One application should work for a couple swims.

1. Nothing. I rinse my suit out when I'm in the shower and then hang dry.
2. I just lick the insides of them before I start. Gross? Maybe. Effective? Yup. I tried anti fog spray once and it was utter crap.
Oh snap on the sniffles except it was a sore throat for me. Highly annoying. Usually after open water swimming I have a small bit of full fat coke to kill whatever is inside me but haven't been doing that for pool swims. Maybe I should.
1. I wear Funkita swimwear that resist chlorine. I rinse at the pool in the shower after my swim then I wash with my sports wash at home. 2. I have this problem too but figure there is nothing to see anyway.

I wash my suit in the shower with the same soap I use to wash myself - Dr. Bronners eucalyptus. It also goes in the washing machine after. They don't usually smell like chlorine too badly, or I'm numb to it.
I just dunk my goggles in the water and drain out all but a tiny amount of water. That water sort of wipes the lens when I rotate, so no need to anti fog.
I sneeze after swimming too, doesn't matter if it's warm cold fresh or chlorinated, still makes me sneeze. I have found that blowing my nose immediately after getting out helps a little.
I want to try swimming laps at the local community center. I haven't done anything like this before.
1) what do I need? Suit, towel, lock, shampoo/shower stuff. Anything else? Do I need goggles or a cap? I'm not sure I'm going to like this so would prefer not to buy more stuff before I try it.
2) what's the etiquette? Find lane with slow person in it, insert self, pass.. how? On left like car? Am I supposed to wait until the end and turn more quickly/pass near the wall? Or should I just power through and swim underneath them? 😜And what if someone wants to pass me?

1. Goggles at least, probably also a cap. You'll like it more if you're not getting water or hair in your eyes. Flip flops.
2. Pick a lane with a swimmer of similar speed. Do not overestimate your speed. If there's only one person, sit on the edge with your feet in the water until the person acknowledges you. If they're a typical swimmer, they'll just make eye contact, nod, scoot to their preferred side, and go on swimming. You take the other side and do laps on that side, like you have a very tiny lane to yourself. If there's already two people in the lane, you circle swim. Circle swim on the right always, like driving a car. Don't pass when circle swimming, except at the end of the lane. Just tap them firmly on the foot and they *should* move to the corner at the end so you can pass. If they don't, there's not a lot you can do without risking a head on collision.
