My niece (whom we are raising) is driving my 1994 Subaru. Two weeks after she got her license a guy clipped her driver side and out his tire imprint in the driver side door (and it was a hit and run). DH had though about having the car repainted prior and luckily decided that was a bad idea. We just have liability on it. She has a friend who has a brand new land rover waiting for her when she gets her license. To me that is freaking insane regardless of how much insurance is. A teenager Delos not need to be driving a brand new anything. They have a high probability of getting into a car wreck of some sort. Not worth it, even if you can afford it

I wish someone would tell DSS's mom this. She's hellbent on buying him a brand new Jeep Wrangler next year when he turns 16. Not only is the insurance going to be high because it's a brand new vehicle, but it will also be high because of the TYPE of vehicle it is, and with a new, young male driver it will be through the roof. DH and I have tried talking her out of it and "settling" for a used vehicle instead, but it's falling on deaf ears.

I have a feeling we're going to be at the very least helping David with his car insurance! As long as he's responsible and doing well in school, I'm don't have a problem with it. I told him he won't even be driving until he's 18 if he doesn't show us he's ready for that kind of responsibility.

Hopefully you don't have to pay for the increase of insurance for her poor decisions.

Oh we know she is. She's a flashy kind of person, so sometimes she projects that onto DSS.

We've already expressly told her (both verbal and through text, just in case) that we will not agree to pay for insurance on a new vehicle for him. Actually, we'd prefer if we just split the car payment (also expressly stated what we were comfortable paying for a car) and put gas and insurance on DSS as his responsibility. Luckily, we have almost a year to sort this all out. Maybe by then we can all come up with a compromise.

I kind of thought this was common knowledge. There's pretty good statistical information out there that teen male drivers are much more risky than their female counterparts. Insurance doesn't drop for a very long time with males.

My male friend had to help pay for his car insurance. I think having a kid do that or help pay for a car is a good idea. It not only makes them aware of what they will need to do on their own once they are older, but perhaps will make them more aware of just the cost that comes with the privilege.

I had three vehicles when DS got his license, a '92 Honda accord, a '94 dodge pickup, and a 2000 ford escape. My agent ran the numbers on all three, and while it wasn't cheap, the pickup was the least expensive. She said it didn't really matter how old the vehicle was if it was a honda or a toyota, that they would be expensive no matter what.

I think even this is generous! My parents made me pay for half of the car, gas, and insurance

My dad's rule was if we drove the car he gave us, he would pay for insurance but we had to pay for gas. So I drove a Ford Taurus for several years (back in the 90's)

But when we wanted something different, we were 100% responsible (he did cosign a loan). That's most likely what we'll do for our girls.

Funny enough, DH just got a new (to us) car and in reality, it will most likely be Dd's first car in 10-12 years.

This is exactly how it was for me, too. I wanted the same for my kids, but DH wants to contribute a little bit. Our budget for what we're comfortable spending on a car for a kid is $150/month. If DSS's mom wants to match that, that's a $300/month car, which is AWESOME. DS is only 7, so who knows what would happen in 9 years when he drives, but I'd like to up that to $200 for him. If they want something above and beyond that, that's on them.

H was extra excited when we got married (he was 24) because car insurance went down that year and again the following year when he turned 25.

My sisters & I drove cars about as old as we were. Toyota camrys and Honda accords. H drove a chevy impala that was older than him.
