Yup, my dh just called me about buying my 17 yo step daughter a Lexus suv. It's a '99 but still. He's not very happy with me right now but eff that noise.
A 17yr old Lexus can't be that much, and possibly not even that safe.
I don't know. I gave my nephew my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee last year - I'm attached to it because it was the first car I ever bought for myself. We used it for 4 wheeling on the beach but nothing really more than that, and he needed a car and had just gotten his license. Its a pretty solid car and I maintained it well (well my dad did, really).

Luckily we live outside of a major city where public transportation makes it easy to get around, so for now we've dodged the car buying bullet for step-son. If DH and I have a child, when he or she is driving age my philosophy will mimic what my scenario was growing up, which was I bought the car/made payment/gas and my parents paid insurance as long as I didn't get speeding tickets. My older brother had the "hand me downs", when my dad wanted to upgrade the car my older brother bought it off him...nothing crazy but about $2-$3,000 basically equivalent to a cash down payment on a car. I believe since he didn't have a car payment he paid his monthly insurance fee.
All of my H's brothers wrecked cars before they turned 20. Including my H. An 18 y/o totaled my car IN A FUCKING PARKING LOT. And my car was parked. He was just driving like an asshole. I was so pissed because it ended up costing me $7K.
