If you were going to put together some makeup basics to keep in your gym bag, what would you include?
I'm trying to make it as easy as possible for me to keep up a new fitness routine and I recently joined the gym that's in my work building. This means that I could roll out of bed, head to work and workout, then shower and start my day. I bought some travel sized toiletries to keep in the bag (shampoo, face wash, deodorant, etc), but don't want to hassle with transferring my usual daily makeup back and forth. Because I know that will give me an excuse.
My usual "no fuss" daily face includes the following products: - No 7 medium coverage foundation - Maybelline under eye brightener - Under eye concealer - Blush - Naked Basics 2 eye palette - Mascara - Hourglass Ambient Light powder to finish
The drugstore stuff I can just buy duplicates of, but I also don't want to worry about brushes. Any recommendations for some easy cream blush/shadow options and maybe a dupe finishing powder?
I just bought duplicates of my daily favorites. I know that is probably not helpful. I don't want to use different products just because I'm not getting ready at home. I also don't want to lug them back and forth, so I get that part.
The Maybelline Bouncy blushes or whatever they're called are a nice drugstore cream blush. I apply with my fingers and the packaging is pretty slim. I'd also suggest a BB cream or tinted moisturizer which usually apply nicely without brushes.
For finger blush application I rotate the following through my gym makeup bag: -stila convertible color minis -maybelline master glaze stick -nyx blush sticks -benefit tints (posietint and benetint)
I also own the nyx cream blush in pots, but don't like that for finger application. (for no good reason really...) I kinda want to try the stila watercolor blushes too. Just a word of warming that when the weather warms up if your bag will stay in your car you may want to be careful about sticks & creams. I switch to the benefit tints when the weather gets warm so they won't melt in the car.
For a dupe for a hourglass style powder I have a nyx radiant powder they don't seem to make anymore, so that's not helpful. I have seen the elf illuminating pallete (one of those nice quads they make with the interchangable pots) mentioned as a dupe for HG ALP, but I am extremely skeptical about that. I want it anyway though just because I'm a highlighter junky. On the reasoanble side of the SUPER GLOW glow I also have been known to use WnW Reserve your Cabana as an all over powder, which is similarish to the hourglass effect depending on which ambient light powder you use. But may be a bit much for some.
You'll need a brush for your powder and eyes though, won't you? EcoTools makes some totally affordable little travel size sets that are decent quality. Since they're small there isn't really a good big fluffy brush for finishing, but if you're ok with a denser powder brush I have both the travel kabuki and a set that came with a smallish face/blush brush that works pretty well. The little eye set is decent too (this one: www.ulta.com/essentials-6-pc-eye-brush-set?productId=xlsImpprod1620045) though not well suited for very precise looks since two of those brushes are pretty darn big. Great for a quick wash of color type looks though. And the smudge brush is nice.

I don't go to a gym anymore since I have workout equipment at home but for my work bag I just keep doubles of what I use at home in case I get stuck working a double. I try and get the travel sized if I can.
For work I don't use much.
-moisturizer, been using ponds right now. The little travel sized bottle is so cute .
-Ulta foundation stick
- maybelline powder, I'm not sure which one.
-nyx eyeshadow, usually a nude color or small palette.
-UD waterline eyeliner
-benefit roller lash mascara
- I keep a real techniques travel sized brush kit in my bag too.
- I don't wear blush, bronzer, highlighter or lipstick to work but keep sample sized ones I got from Ipsy in my bag in case I have somewhere to go after work.
for some reason I keep coming back to this thread confused about the no brushes+UD N1 issue and I finally realized that you've said you AREN'T planning to actually use powder shadow. OH.
i'm a dingbat sometimes.
So - cream shadow - on gym days I usually just go with a quick swipe of Colourpop Hanky Panky, which is basically only half a shade darker than my skintone once it's on my eyes but kinda evens out the tone on my lids and just looks a bit more put together. I recently added the aforementioned ecotools eyebrush set and one of the WnW 5 pan palettes in the Naked Truth for days I feel like actually doing some shadow. (WnW black pan shadows are awesome for the price. Not UD quality, but totally decent pigment and pretty blendable and so cheap that I wn't be sad if it shatters or gets lost.) I also really like the Maybelline color tattoo cream shadows - bad to the bronze used to be my HG but my pot is like 2 years old at this point and a bit dried out. the taupe one is nice too, but I have issues getting it to blend sometimes. another good single neutral color option might be the bare minerals cream shadow - this stuff: www.ulta.com/5-in-1-bb-advanced-performance-cream-eyeshadow-broad-spectrum-spf-15?productId=xlsImpprod10641012
I think there was a sample of these in...an ipsy bag? Or a really good ulta gwp? way back in the dawn of the original makeup thread on PCE so like a dozen of us all tried it at the same time, and I remember that opinions were decidedly mixed, but the people who liked it (which included me) LOVED it. Trick is to use a light hand - the doe foot can carry way too much product if you just slap it on there, but if you just use a little bit and blend it out quickly with your finger it makes a nice wash of neutral color.
My favorite for quick no-brush application is definitely the colourpop though. First color cosmetic I ever hit pan on (after using it every single day for close to a year...). One of these days I'll actually make up my mind on another color or two to add to my arsenal. (I also have Bill - a nice muted purple-gray. which I'm wearing today.)
wawa I'm totally using powder shadows right now, and just toting my regular brushes back and forth. But I just figured cream would be easier in a pinch and make it so I had less in the makeup bag. Of course, I'm sort of a dingbat too because it never occurred to me to buy a travel set of brushes. D'oh!
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! I'm going to head to Ulta this weekend to find a few options.
A bit random, but if you need a travel hairbrush I just saw these in the Sephora sale section for $3. I'm getting one for my gym bag, but I work out after work so I'm not much help on makeup. I love that it holds stuff.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain

I just realized I forgot my favorite finger applied blush- Becca souffle!
I think these are getting discontinued (or at least reformulated). They're on sale at Sephora and the Becca web site.
NOOOOOOOOOOO! Shit! And Ulta doesn't even have them anymore. I can't even really stock up because I'm concerned that it could dry out if it sits too long, even unopened I wouldn't have confidence. SHITBALLS. GODDAMMIT.
