Finally watched. Loved it. H said he was surprised they aired this episode and that Trump had already criticized the show/network because of it. Haven't seen that, but wouldn't be surprised.
I just don't even understand how getting along with Trump supporters is even going to help anything. My brother made a comment of FB that going from Obama to Trump was like going from Nas to Future.
Trump supporter: More like going from 1 star hotel to 4 star hotel. I thought Nas was supposed to be good. Brother: Not talking about abilities just oratory TS: so as long as it sounds good it can all be BS. Gotcha
So they think Obama is a liar and Trump isn't? I just can't get that. They laugh at the meme of Obama leaving office with an amazing family, no scandals, etc. But Trump is ok. There is no way to get along with a person who thinks like this.
They think Obama made race relations worse because now they are hearing things that we have always known, but they don't understand that if it was always so bad why their black "friends" never said anything before. Um, look at your response now asshole.

It just so happens that I'm watching it now. Dre's monologue made me tear up. Maybe this is flame-worthy, but I haven't been able to watch HRC's post-election speech or Obama's farewell speech because I know I'm going to cry and cry hard. I DVRd them and will (maybe) watch eventually.
Is that what the episode says? I haven't watched it yet.
It does. It says that where "we" are failing is not taking the time to understand why people voted for Trump.
I took it as that the vast majority of Trump supporters do not hate Obama but rather they couldn't see where Hilary Clinton would make things better for them personally.
As such they voted for Trump because they could overlook his faults (mildly put) because of their desire for their personal circumstances to improve.
In my opinion the similarities to the Brexit vote is there...people only voted based on their very personal lense without looking at the bigger picture.
Yes this is what I took from it as well. But why is it always up to the oppressed to be open to the oppressors? I understand voting for your own personal interest because I would take Kasich over Trump despite his views on abortion because those don't personally affect me even though I know they affect many many women. But I support his views on mass incarceration and rehabilitation and those are higher on my priority list. But why didn't/don't Trump supporters have to do the same for Obama?
I don't know about understanding but I've got to get along with Trump voters. I live in Oklahoma and for my own sanity, I've got to let the anger go. What has surprised me is the number of people who won't admit to voting for trump. I know they did because their eyes get shifty and their body language screams shame when the topic comes up. Plus I wouldn't expect anything more of them. Something about their shame gives me a tiny bit of peace.
Getting along does not mean acceptance for me. It means I can have meetings at work without shooting darts with my eyes and help the old lady at the grocery store reach the top shelf. I won't be coming to BBQs and play dates but I was already very hesitant about that pre-election.

So I finally watched this and I really liked the episode until the end. Dre's speech at work had me in tears. His speech at the end had my rolling my eyes, but my husband was giving me the death stare b/c its what he has been telling me all along. Maybe I'll get there one day.
I watched and loved it as well. I think they did a really good job and the writing was pretty spot on.
You can tell Kenya really did his research by talking to Trump supporters in order to get their perspective. I wonder if Lucy will be back and how they will handle that over the next few years.
iammalcolmx - I am jealous of your husband's friend. He has my dream job!
