Yesterday, I ran a small errand to a local convenience store. The parking lot is small and as I pulled into a spot, I gently squeezed the brake to come to a stop. The spot faced the store and curb - and had a few people walking into the store. As I was coming to a stop, the car next to me was pulling out. This has never happened to me before, but since the car next to me was backing-out, it gave me the illusion that I was still moving forward. For a split second, I thought my brakes failed and I was going to jump the curb, hard. My heart started pounding inside my chest. I squeezed the brake even harder.
It didn't take more than a second to re-orient myself inside my fully-stopped car while I watched the other car drive away. I felt dizzy and nauseous. I realized that because the car next me started pulling-out just as I was pulling-in, it made me feel like MY car was still moving.

I always feel like that in those car washes where the machine moves back and forth (versus the ones that pull your car through a tunnel). It's disconcerting and unpleasant, to say the least.
This has happened to me a few times at our local Costco. There's something about the lighting in their parking garage. It's hard to see if someone is inside of the car next to you - so when it moves, I'm always alarmed and think it's my car.
