She just said she didn't know that IDEA was a federal law.
JFC. That should instantly disqualify her. If I was interviewing her for an entry level position at my agency I would thank her for coming out and politely but quickly show her the door.
I hate that I feel infinitely more qualified to be secretary of education than our potential secretary of education. I want these people to be smarter than me, dammit!

Oh no guys, it's totes cool that she has never attended a public school, sent her kids to public school or worked in public school. What's fair is fair! /head explodes
Someone find me the cartoon of the people st the fence showing that fair isn't always equal because we need to send that shit to every Republican not outraged on this panel. Alaska's Lisa Murkowski seemed to be outraged. Missed Roberts but my guess is he said "doo doo do, Koch brothers are fantastic, amiright?"

I would not hire someone as an entry level teacher if they didn't know about IDEA.

I just called my senators again.
I'm 28 years old. This is my sixth year out of college, and my sixth year working in education.
I know a lot more than DeVos - like, I am substantially more knowledgeable than she is on these issues - and THAT SHOULD NEVER BE THE MOTHERFUCKING CASE. To get my job in a school, I had to interview twice, have a master's degree, and have a few years of experience. DeVos, who will be leading our schools for the next four years, does not have enough knowledge to interview or get a job at my school.
I have had it up to MOTHERFUCKING HERE with politicians who think that education positions require 0 experience. It demeans my profession, trivializes the seriousness of our work, and jeopardizes the fate of public schools as a civic institution in our country.
So if you're listening, Pat Motherfucker Toomey, I'm going to call you every day until 2021.

This is what I keep saying - just by virtue of attending public schools & sending your kids to one - you have more experience than her. I am attempting to run for school board and to think - I'm worried I'm not qualified enough. Then I see this.

I just emailed him minutes ago as well. And Bob Casey to express my support.
I taught at a private school for 7 years with a master's degree in education, but no certificate. I am no longer teaching because I left my position after my daughter was born and now AM NO LONGER QUALIFIED IN THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA to be a classroom teacher. I am happy in the position I am in (in a completely different industry), but I would love to get back into education at some point. The problem is, I would essentially need a second master's degree to complete all of the courses needed to sit for the Praxis tests and complete my student teaching. I simply cannot do that at this stage in my life, so I will wait for the right time or a job that will pay me to get another degree.
So if I cannot teach, even with a master's degree in education, 7 years of experience teaching both special education and honors classes, and teaching at the college level, then there is NO WAY that DeVos has any right to even be a participant in that hearing.
I know that none of this is funny, but the grizzly bear thing is still making me giggle a bit. School shootings was the SECOND thing she brought up in that answer.

I wish all of these positions were handled like real jobs in which qualifications, experience and objectives matter.
"Thank you for your interest in this position. While we found that you have interesting qualifications, we have decided to go with someone who is educated on education and who will be dedicated to making it equally accessible to all students."

I hate how this process is making me HATE people. (Cough Andrews cough) Betsy was assumed. *super side note: I went for coffee with a new acquaintance named Betsy this am. She & I were really enjoying getting to know one another, & somehow politics came up. We both kinda held our breath, danced around it for a second, & then admitted we HATE Cheeto Jesus. The relief was palpable, guys!! Anyway, I took it as a hopeful sign for this shitshow..? (Shrug)

Uhhhhh, isn't there an IDEA case before the Supreme Court right now?! And the person that wants to be the Secretary of Education has no clue what it is?!?!
I found out yesterday she's the sister of the Blackwater founder...who has been advising the transition team on State and DOD picks. WTAF. I want these scum nowhere near my government.
I didn't watch, but I saw this posted by Sen. Schumer's FB. <3 FHTK
This is so depressing on so many levels. RIP FHTK, VP.
I've committed almost my entire professional career towards ensuring that all students, especially the most vulnerable, have equal access to a quality public education. No matter what administration held office I always felt that they shared that same basic goal, even if I disagreed on their methods. I no longer think that way.

Thank you! I was mobile last night and I don't use the tapatalk app, so pictures are not happening while I'm mobile lol.

No prob. We saw that graphic in my Library Sciences masters degree program. I love it--it's a way better representation of the difference than I could ever word it.
And this whole Devos thing is gross. She has spent NARY ONE DAY in public education, but yet she's poised to run the whole damn show. That makes me feel physically ill.
Anyone who reads this article will have a better understanding of IDEA than Betsy deVos. Shoot, most people who don't read this article will have a better understanding of the public school system than she does and probably have a better grasp on the policies and laws. (And did someone mention above that her brother is founded Blackwater and is advising Trump on State and Defense appointments? If not, I'm mentioning it.)

I said this elsewhere, but...
Well, wasn't that a prime example of proficiency and growth? DeVos is not going to meet "proficiency" standards for understanding public school metrics, but she sure got a lot of growth from Franken's explanations.

I didn't see all of it, but from the clips I saw, the thing that struck me was that she had clearly met with some of the members privately beforehand (Warren and Hassan both referenced it). How did she not expect those questions? Hassan implied that they had discussed her son/educating kids with special needs at the meeting; did DeVos think that she and Hassan were good and that it wouldn't come up again? Did no one tell her that the questions would be used to get her to put points on the record?
