So now that the time has come, are you all doing any new action items?
I'm going to a planned parenthood meeting on Wed. On Sat I'm signed up for a free advocacy training conference at a local medical school for health care professionals, so I'm really looking forward to that. I put out an email to a statewide women's rights org that specifically focuses on WOC reproductive rights, but it's been a few weeks and I haven't heard back, so I need to follow up.
I need to buy a few random household things, so I was going to try to find some minority owned businesses to support for my purchases.
So what are you all up to? Also what ever happened to Shaun Kings protest or whatever? I know he can be a clown and I never signed up for the emails.
I would love to get involved with our local BOE, but I don't know how to make it work. For now I am going in on stupid people on my brother's FB page and posting articles and calling people out.
In addition to my drug policy, drug education, and mental health training work, I'm joining a youth council and will be attending their regular meetings - they discuss youth mental health and drug use issues.
I'm going to a benefit tonight for the Chicago Women's Health Center.
I'm donating as much as I am able to orgs that matter.
I would love to get involved with something with drug policy. Last time I looked everything was looking for lawyers and I am definitely not that. I also have to make sure it doesn't conflict with my current job. I have thought about going back to school and getting a Master's in public policy. And then using my current work experience and other Master's to do drug policy work when I retire.

Yeah I've recently decided that I'm going to do a fellowship in family planning which all the programs include an MPH. So when I pay off my loans and stop doing clinical practice I have something to fall back on and can use my MPH for policy and/or non profit work.
There are also a few public policy fellowships aimed a minority doctors that look interesting so if I don't get in to a family planning fellowship can do that.
Definitely looking to have as many options as possible for the future.

There are certainly others ways to get involved!! Feel free to PM me if you would like to chat more!

I'm going to start with not shiving the woman I currently share a cube with when she starts in on how surprising it is that "all this racism has resurfaced."

There is a budget meeting tonight put together by the advocacy group I emailed you about earlier. I will let you know if they actually answer any hard questions. In the last board meeting they voted for up to 30% increase in salaries for certain admin personnel. Ridiculous.

I just got an email for that. I signed up after the email you sent me. Going to things at night is so hard because my H is still at work and I have DD. If you are planning on going please let me know what was discussed.

I miss sharing a cube with my manager.
I'm side eyeing this woman. Hard. At least her bubble has been burst.
As for me, I'm going to start "small" and be more outspoken when I normally would have been silent. I have often bit my tongue so as to spare arguments with family or friends, but I can't do that anymore.

See if they have an email list to get updates, agendas, meeting notices, etc. If they do, you can easily get plugged into what's going on. Also see if they stream their meetings online or have a radio station that airs the meetings.

I've had more than one person comment that "at least we live in the bay area where that sort of thing doesn't happen." You've just gotta walk away b/c I need this job.
I recently moved to a new state and trying to feel out what I want to get involved with locally. I'm still making phone calls to political officials, I made a donation to an organization that makes coats that turn into sleeping bags for the homeless, and currently looking into how I can make a food donation bin happen in my new neighborhood.
