Background: our hearth room is set up like a conversation space. We have a 9.5 foot round area rug with 4 armchairs set up in a circle. We ordered a 38" round coffee table to go in the middle. It showed up damaged. They ordered a new one...which also showed up damaged. We told them not to order another one. The manager offered to take $200 off the price and we told him we'd think about it.
SO and I were trying to decide what to do and we started contemplating ordering an ottoman from them instead, as we both like to sit with our feet up. We go to the store and we price out an ottoman and it is going to be at least $500 more than the coffee table.
Here is our dilemma. The ottoman would be a lot more comfortable to put our feet on while we chat or read, but it will be at least double the cost and we would lose some of the functionality as people would only be able to put their drinks on a tray on the ottoman. And, we would purchase 2 little tables to put near the arm chairs to put drinks on, as well. So, more $. And still not as functional as the coffee table. But, a lot more comfortable.
So, WWYD? Keep the coffee table (the damage isn't that extensive and we could fix it) for functionality and take the $200 off? Or most likely triple the cost to make it more comfortable but lose some functionality?
And, I've looked extensively for a ottoman that is more reasonably priced and cannot find one, so going cheaper there isn't an option.
I'm growing older but not up. My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck, let the winds of time blow over my head. I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead.

superduper and whisperingalene, the rug is a circle so we were trying to do a circular ottoman. And superduper, I know this will sound super lame but...we were thinking that we'd have to use a tray on the ottoman but the chairs are pretty cushy. We did a test and put a tray in the middle of the table to mimic the ottoman. It was kind of a PITA for the drinks to be in the center as they were hard to reach. FWP, I know.

Personally, I'd prefer an ottoman. I'm *in love* with the round tufted one from CB2, but it's about $500 and it's only available in two fabrics. (I wish it came in leather, I'd be all over that)

superduper, we put our feet on the coffee table now but because it's wood, we can have our drinks at the edge as we don't have to worry about them tipping over.

I would so knock my drinks over if I did that LOL
Our style is called "We Don't Have Children"....i.e. we have a cream colored rug because we are dumb.

treedimensional, I think given they ordered two and both showed up damaged, I'm convinced the materials used just aren't up to par. And therefore, it may be difficult to get a perfect one. I will say, the second was was FAR less damaged so we kept that one and sent the original one back (the delivery guys said they wouldn't tell anyone lol). We can fix it and probably no one would be able to tell.

Right. You're keeping it then. So what about a table pad?

We haven't formally made a decision. The manager told us to hang on to it until we decided. Funny you should say that because my SO told me that we should buy a piece of memory foam and have his mother sew a cover for it, a la a homemade table pad.
I just heard back from the manager and he said he'd take $250 off if we wanted to buy the ottoman, instead. So it would be $450 more than the coffee table originally was. I think we are leaning towards keeping the coffee table and taking the $200 discount. An extra $450 isn't a ton, but then you add in 2 extra side tables. And, we want to get a king sized bed (we currently have a queen). The more money we spend now, the further out my kitchen reno will be.
