The choke collar is a red flag, and yes the pack stuff has been discredited. The other training seems ok. You might want to post on CEP where a lot of former pesties hang out.
We interviewed a trainer today for our fearful and aggressive mini schnauzer. He's a dream for us in the house mostly but an unpredictable nightmare with strangers and other dogs. We have a newborn, so we've got to work on him more.
The trainer we interviewed today said they would have us do a 21-day boot camp where the dog is basically tethered or crated 24/7 and learning to heel or stay in place inside before starting leash work. She said they use a mix of positive reinforcement and correction and do use choke collars for leash work. She talked a bit about pack stuff, which i thought i'd read here was discredited.
They are part of the canine trade group and have a canine good citizen evaluator logo on website.
She also is a horse trainer and does dressage. That was a red flag for me because i think i read here that might be cruel? But i know less than nothing about horses. wawa?
Are there any red flags here? What other questions should i ask? Who are the dog training folks here i should tag? pixy0stix??
Dressage is not in any way inherently cruel. I'm sure there are cruel dessage people just like in any sport, but it's generally fine. My sister is a dressage person.
