Hi! I don't go here, but was hoping you wouldn't mind the intrusion. H & I will be attending the retirement ceremony of a friend in the Air Force. The ceremony is at 4pm, followed by a cocktail hour and dinner.
1. What type of attire do guests usually wear?
2. Is this typically a gift-giving occasion? If so, would it be better to send the gift in advance?
The service members will be in blues, so the equivalent civilian dress is business professional. I'd probably choose a shift dress and cardigan or blazer.
I'm not sure if it's traditionally a gift-giving occasion but I would probably give a gift and would bring it that day if it's something small. If it's like, a case of wine or something, send it to their house lol

Given that there is a cocktail hour and dinner, I'd definitely go with business professional. Better to be one of the more dressed up than too casual.
As for a gift…it's up to you. If it's someone you see regularly, I'd give him/her something after the fact so they don't have more to carry home than they already will.
My dad retired in December and I did all sorts of hand wringing about what I should wear lol. I ended up wearing business casual and was very appropriately dressed. I gave him a gift and just brought it with me - there was a gift table like there would be at a wedding.
