Working with racist ass patients

I'm a dental assistant for an Egyptian female pregnant dentist. She has a male dentist that comes in one day a week. I'm covering for an Indian Muslim womans mat leave.

Anyways I'm learning some front desk stuff too. I've been here since December. The front desk woman had an emergency and the Indian employee on mat leave came in to help train me mostly because she's bored lol.

We were reviewing the patients of the day and she said "oh Paul is coming, ok you have to handle him because I can't. " I ask why and she says he won't look at her speak to her to acknowledge her. She wears a hijab and stuff and he has no problem with the sweet older white lady so we can guess why. Anyways

He walks in stares at her then me, and asks me where the white lady is. I said she's not in today but you can have a seat. He does and then when the dentist goes in to his room he trips out. He's like where is the dentist?? She said well I am the dentist this is MY practice. He said no I mean Dr...so and so (male) she's like oh he only comes on Tuesdays. He then throws a fit about her being pregnant and mumbles something about "Fucking pakis" she said I don't employee a single Pakistani individual but even if I did I would still have an incredible practice. You can reschedule with Dr...blah blah (male) for another day. And walks out.

He comes to me Fucking ranting and raving demanding the male Doctors cell phone number. I said no. I told him our dentist is lovely and does great work but if he isn't happy here there are other dentists in the area. He called me "a dumb bitch" a "dumbass mexican" (I am not mexican which made me giggle which made him angrier)then other patients started screaming at him and it was like a huge fight and he left while giving us all the finger.

My dentist cried in her office and I want to smash all things.

There is not enough money in the world. Glad he is no longer a patient. He doesn't get to terrorize every person in there and demand things. I hope he can't find another dentist that accepts his insurance.

Ugh, I am so sorry. People are so ignorant sometimes.

I did a home health rotation the other day, and not only did I think I was going to have to whip out my inhaler from the overwhelming smell of smoke, there was confederate flag memorabilia in the house. I thought, nope, I don't think home health will be for me. Fortunately, I was with the other nurse and the patient wasn't an issue (they were just recuperating there), but I don't know that I would feel comfortable living where I live doing home health.

I know I'll encounter it at some point on the floor, but I hope that day is a long ways away.

Oh, man, I know I'm not supposed to wish harm on people, but I hope his tooth gets infected and causes him a lot of pain. :-P I think you did the best you can. I'm glad he's going to another practice.

This is such a thorny subject for me, because you are supposed to put your client's best interests first, and that can mean maintaining rapport despite behaviors you would not condone, and a lot of my patients have neurological issues that affect their ability to inhibit impulsive responding. But, I feel like silence can indicate agreement, and so I try to do a medium-level intervention. It helps that I'm a WOC and my husband is black, and I have pictures of him around the office. A (teenage) patient started to tell a joke that I could tell would be racist once, and I said, "Look around the office and decide if you want to rethink what you're gonna say," and he was like, "Oh...yeah, maybe I shouldn't."

So sorry that you guys had to deal with that loser. It stinks that people have gotten even more emboldened to treat others in that manner. The times are a changing and diversity is here to stay.

I'd refuse to schedule him anymore. You can absolutely ban abusive patients from the practice. This isn't an emergency room.

Yeah he would not be allowed back if that were my practice. I'm glad there were other patients there to witness and help out him in his place.

So sorry you and the dentist had to experience such ugliness.

If I was a patient, I'd be upset that this individual was allowed to come back to the office. I feel horrible for the dentist, and hope if possible that this particular client is no longer a client.....
