There is a legit shortage of glue in the STL suburbs right now due to some sort of slime craze. I discovered this because it's something I pinned and was off for a four-day weekend with DS, so I randomly decided to try it. I went to Michaels, JoAnn and Wal-Mart in person and the shelves were swept clean of not just the clear glue I was looking for but seriously ALL glue. The sales people got really twitchy about it and said they can't keep any glue in stock. My H called our local Ace Hardware and another Micheals and they were all out, too, and on my way out of the parking lot I ran into two other moms discussing it. (One said there was a rumor there was some at Lowes and that her kid wants to start a slime making business. I said she'd be better off starting a glue distribution company.)
What the H is going on? I'm now thinking of buying a gallon of clear glue from an education supply store because it's $12 (compared to $6 for 5 oz that Amazon wants) but it better be the best project EVER.
I've made it more times than I can count. Luckily my daughter was on the cutting edge of slime and I bought my gallon a while ago (over a year ago) so it's still going strong, and she's made it with friends a dozen times and I've done it with my odyssey of the Mind team twice. There are lots of different recipes, I don't think you need glue for all of them - there's one with contact lens solution that is cool and less slimy (more pillowy).
It's an epidemic. Kids are obsessed and there are YouTube channels just for slimy squishy things.
ETA: It's cool but messy. Be prepared to be scraping dried slime off your floor forever. Pay attention to the measurements bc if there isn't enough Borax is will be the messiest thing ever.
Yes! I was at my younger cousin's birthday party this weekend (12 years old) and she was talking about making slime.
All the kids in her 6th grade class are either making it, or paying others to make it for them. She's planning on making a bunch over school vacation to sell to classmates.
Sounds like the going rate (in southern MA) for a baggie o' slime is a couple bucks.
There is a glue shortage in MN. My friends DD wanted to make some for Valentine's Day and we couldn't find any.
I feel like people not in the know must be so confused. What if you just want glue to actually glue things? The only stuff I could find yesterday was a glue stick and rubber cement, LOL.
That's so crazy! Personally, I'd avoid that stuff like the plague. When I was younger, my nephew made some and took it in the car. I never got that glue junk out of my car's upholstery.
That I was able to find at WalMart! I tried to buy it at JoAnn and the woman looked at me with great pity when I brought forward some kind of ironing spray and asked if it was liquid starch. Whatever. It was next to the spray starch. It was liquid. I don't starch things!

My kids just made some at daycare for Vday. I let me daughter play with it once, on a foil lined cookie sheet and it was still all over my table cloth, and her shirt, and the floor.
It's now in the bottom of the trash can where it belongs

I buy school glue at dollar tree. I make slime with borax because we already have it. As far as I know, the Chicagoland area is safe and still has glue aavailable for purchase. I'm sure my neighborhood fb gripers would mention it.
I had the same problem! I bought some polyvinyl alcohol off amazon, which the the active ingredient in glue that makes slime, but haven't used it yet. If you're going to keep it for a long time or sell it you should add a preservative and use distilled water.
We make slime like once a week at school. I buy glue by the gallon on Amazon.
OK - does the glue have to be clear? It seems like it doesn't have to be for the structure but if you want to do the glitter galaxy look, it should be. I couldn't find the clear glue on Amazon by the gallon.
I am not selling it mala , I just like a good deal and don't want to pay a bunch for the bottles if I'm just goign to end up with my kid wanting to do this again and again.

Yes we started this about 6 months ago because of the damn YouTube Kids. It's a fun project and does turn out really cool. It's either slime or play doh so the mess is enviable either way here.

Dd has been making it at her after school. She's brought some home and it wasn't messy at all.
I wanted to make some with her this week while she's on break. I grabbed the liquid starch at Walmart but when I headed to the glue it was pretty much all wiped out!! All that was left was some glitter glue so I hope that works just as well. I was laughing thinking that clearly I was not the only one who had this idea for winter break!

My husband wanted to make slime with some boys I was going to be baby sitting (older). I was like "no, i don't want that mess in the house." He is obsessed with the idea of making slime. Luckily the baby isn't old enough, but I see all kinds of messy science projects happening over the years
