I want 2 bookcases to flank my fireplace. Everything reasonably priced seems very cheap/unsturdy. Any ideas where to look? Don't want any diy involved at this point. (I begged dh to build them for me and it's not going to happen.)
The Billy from ikea is pretty blah on its own but I may consider it if I can't find anything better.
can you add moulding to the Billy to make it less blah?
Not in the foreseeable future. My dh is very busy with work so I need something as-is. Someday I'd like to just get built-ins made but we have many other projects to do first.
Have you looked at the hemnes or liatorp at IKEA? They are nicer than the Billy bookcases.
Just looked at the Hemnes again and that might work. The plain version is only $150. I think I was looking at the one with doors before and it was a lot more expensive.

I would also check if there's a local carpenter or anything who does that. When I was in Austin there was a "bookcase guy" and those bookcases have been with me for 15 years and about 7 moves. I like IKEA okay, but especially at the bottom the wood often splits. Our Billy bookcases are all peeling at the bottom where the vacuum hits them.
We've got some Hemnes stuff (bookecases and daybed) from Ikea that we had a contractor hack to make faux built-ins. They'd be my choice because they're real wood, reasonably priced, sturdy and you can always fancy them up later with moulding, doors or whatever once you've got the time and budget available.

Love this! Thanks for sharing. I need to measure again but I'm definitely leaning toward the Hemnes.
I forgot that we have these in DD's playroom (a shorter version). I wanted something nicer than the Billy bookcases but cheaper than IKEA's other options. These fit the bill. They are pretty nice IRL. Not like furniture store nice but really nice for the price, IMO.
