Your body chemistry isn't playing well with one of the alloys/other metals in the ring, it's unfortunate, but, I wouldn't assume that there's something wrong with the ring itself (assuming it was described well in the listing). A 10k gold ring is only ~41% gold, it's much more likely that you reacted to copper/nickel in the "other" part than the gold (especially since you haven't had this problem before). And it's entirely possible that your current hormone situation is causing the reaction and you won't react under more normal conditions.
I hope the seller is willing to refund it or exchange it if you don't want to wait it out (to see if it gets better after your hormones have leveled out)- a white gold uses different filler metals (platinum and silver usually), or you can try a 14k or 18k ring, as they have a much higher gold:other metals ratio. I hope you find a happy solution!
Thanks all. The seller has offered to refund or exchange. She has some other nice garnets. Should i risk trying out a 14k ring or resign myself to other metals? Seller said anemic people can cause more of a reaction sometimes. I was anemic late in pregnancy but tested ok recently and am on daily iron supplements.
Seriously, though- I don't know how much time you spent on pregnancy forums/boards- but, FWIW, this apparently happens during pregnancy quite often. All those "OMG, I think my wedding ring is FAKE!!!" freakout posts stuck with me. And obviously, the hormones stick around for awhile. It really is possible that the reaction won't be present in a year or so. And if it's the anemia (I've hard that- not sure it's true, though), it should get better, too.
So, if you want yellow gold and can afford it- give 14k a try. Otherwise, accept the refund and try again in a year- it might be a totally different experience.
Oh, it happens, and so dramatically- ha! It would probably happen more if some of us didn't swell up so much that we stopped wearing our rings all together (that was me).
I personally love white gold with the deep red garnets, and yellow gold with garnets that lean orange. Don't feel pressured into it, though- give yourself a little time to think about it, it sounds like the seller is reasonable.
Sorry about your ring. I cannot wear my platinum earrings since having DD. They instantly make me break out. I haven't worn earrings in 3 years. My white gold wedding set bothers we too so I have to make sure it is stays coated. It sucks.
