I'm looking for some shorts for my kids. They had some from American Apparel but they are too small now and AA doesn't sell them anymore. I've googled and come up with nothing. Anyone know where I can get some? Like this:
They are insanely easy to make, if you know how to sew (or can get anyone to do it for you). Purlbee has a free pattern. I've made a bunch for DD as PJs and altered the pattern for other shorts (it's got a great fit for her). Less than half a yard of fabric (at least for little kids sizes), stable knit or woven works great. www.purlsoho.com/create/2014/07/24/corinnes-thread-city-gym-shorts-for-all-ages/
ETA: Target has similar styles all over their toddler short section (which goes to size 7 in many styles, via 6x).

Have you made them? Does it seem like it would work to do a little longer on the inseam?

I've made them many, many, many times- with tons of alterations. I've never done them in adult sizes, just kid sizes- they're my go-to for DD's shorts (I've eliminated the side split, making it a one-piece pattern, done ruffles instead of bias tape on the hems, and lengthened them a bit for school shorts- which I do with a flat front/elastic back and various pockets). They're just a really good fit on her.
To tweak the inseam on these is a little trickier than with a plain pants/shorts pattern-when you pull the hem of the shorts down, you need to pull the curve at the side down with it. The easiest way to do that is to make pattern pieces with square corners (instead of rounded corners), add the length you'd like to the inseam by pulling the hem line down, and adding the curves at the corner back in.
