Well obviously it happens all the time but this just happened...
I'm a part of black girls run and there are a few triathletes on there in my area but not a dedicated group that I thought could answer all my swim and bike questions. I'm also a part of black triathletes association but that's more for online support, in my city they don't seem to do a lot of group training. So anyway I reluctantly joined an all women's triathlon group. Mostly all white women.
Today someone posted about a series of open water swims in a lake. I posted that I am going to try to make one and that it'll be my first time in open water. They've all been really supportive of my swimming (I can swim 700ynow by the way!)
But this one lady replied "first time ever?!?" I want to be like yes bitch black people in the US don't generally go swimming in the ocean or lakes for shits and giggles. Sure I've splashed around in the ocean but now I've never swam in it and we never went to any lakes or rivers growing up.
I don't know why her questioning is bothering me so much. White people man.
Right, that's why I was annoyed. First time means first time. Don't act surprised. People in general have a hard time understanding different life experiences.
Yes I would be annoyed and since White women are on my fucking list right now I would be throwing her all sorts of shade.
There's a post on CEP title "what's pissing you off right now?"
My answer is white people... Old white men, young white women, young white men... I can kind of look at old white women without feeling rage, but the rest of them raise my blood pressure on a daily basis.

Team Kicks. It didn't pass my internal test.
Whenever someone says something that just doesn't sit right, I ask myself would they have said the same thing in the same tone (what really matters) to me if I were white/male/skinny etc.
I don't believe she would have said anything about a first time to another white female. Just gushing support which is all you were there for anyway.
That's weird to be surprised that it would be your first time swimming in open water. Aside from triathletes I know, I can't think of anyone who swims in lakes or actually swims in the ocean. Playing yes, but not actually swimming. I'm not white so maybe that's why.

Yeah, exactly.
Some one told me that they didn't like potatoes. And I was like, not in any form? all shocked like this dummy.
Because there's french fries, potato leek soup, baked potatoes, potatoes au gratin, potato chips, tator tots - I mean how the hell can you not like potatoes?
Swimming in open water is different. I'm from LA, and I've never done that either. One time I swam in the ocean snorkeling, but I was wearing fins and shit. And one time I jumped in a waterfall, but I wasn't doing laps and stuff. I don't think I've ever seen people doing the butterfly in the damn Pacific Ocean either.
It's totally understandable to have never had open water experience and if someone told me that I wouldn't be all, really???

I think it's honestly one of those ideas people cannot grasp beyond their own experience. If that's all she said, I'd be annoyed but I wouldn't be too mad.
Btw, congrats on the progress your making. I want to take swim lessons badly as my skills are really weak.
