I'm sure white people are taught not to say negro. Obviously it's no where close to the N word, but I'm sure most would be uncomfortable saying it. If a white person said "negro please" to me I would most definitely give them the side eye. I definitely say negro in the company of black people and hispanic people no problem. I can't think of a time I've used it with my white best friend for example, but maybe I've said it before since I'm comfortable with her? But clearly it's not a regular thing with white people around.

I think non-black people can't use it at all. Black people can use it ironically, as you did. :-) To me it's along the lines of "colored people" as a term that basically screams you're outdated at best and racist at worst.

Grandma would call us colored when we got on her nerves. Example: We didn't want to go to church. Grandma" I am not doing anything for you colored children then!"
I would never use the word it feels sounds and tastes racist af to me personally. I have heard black people say it as you did, usually referring to themselves..it makes me twitch but I personally wouldn't say it.

There is nothing wrong or racist about the word Negro. It's outdated like colored but not racist. I have never heard it as a slur ala the n word. I know I wouldn't use it but that's because it's dated. Like I wish the United Negro College fund would change its name 😏
I'm white and wouldn't use it because its just not a word I would think of. If for some reason it was top of mind, I still probably wouldn't use it because for me I wouldn't want to offend anyone. For me it wouldn't add any clarity or point to the conversation. If someone said it to me, I'd just move on.

I totally forgot until now...I had submitted a publication that talked about racial differences in a certain pediatric medical condition. The terminology we used in the paper was Black, but one of the reviewers in their comments referred to "Negro children." We contacted back the senior editor of the journal and told them that the reviewer should have gotten feedback that the terminology was not acceptable before it was passed along to us. The reviewers are anonymous, of course, but I think this one older and from Europe. I don't know if that terminology is more acceptable there, but the editor agreed with us and apologized.
