What makes a good swim workout for you? Do you have a goal for everyone?
I played around with my settings in swimplan.com and it popped out a swim plan that really challenging, but really good. I was able to hit the paces it set, but it was quite the effort. I think that's what has been missing from my workouts.
A good workout for me is one where I hit all the time intervals on all my sets. I never really have a 'bad' workout in the pool. If I start and something doesn't feel right or isn't clicking, I can change things around and just go with it.
I think swimming is like pizza for me. Even when it's bad, it's still good.
What makes a good swim workout... hmmm. In open water I feel like I had a good workout when I hold a nice straight line through the triangle swim I usually do, and when I feel nice and relaxed and steady throughout. In the pool, I feel like I get the most out of my workouts when I do intervals - I like 100s, but thats only because longer intervals are too painful and I'm not good at really pushing myself for long stretches in the pool. If I do 100s, I usually feel super proud of my pace. But my pace drops off a lot with longer intervals and I don't feel as awesome.
Well, I JUST started swimming again, so I am nowhere near the par that you guys are talking. My goal today was to swim a mile faster than I swam it earlier this week. That's it. Today it took me 24 minutes or so, which was about 5 minutes faster than Tuesday. I also just like to feel that my form is good and my breathing is steady and regular.
But then, I am not training for anything right now. I am just trying to be healthy and overall improve my swimming. I do 150 Meters free, 50 meter breast, rest 30 seconds, repeat. I would like to take less breaks eventually, but right now I have no problem taking it pretty slow while I am growing a human.
emilyj, ktzmoh, can you guys tell me what you do for a swim workout? Like, if you were to write a plan for a newb, what would it be? I would love to have something more "technical" to do so I don't get bored or burnt out doing the same swim every other day, you know?

I usually do a warm up of about 300yds, then a set of drills with a specific focus (working on my pull, kick drills, or breathing drills etc). Then the main set usually has some intervals with a specific swim interval and rest interval. Those can be any length from 25yd sprints to 500yd intervals (which I hate doing, per above). Then I do a cool down of like 100-200yds.
I think there are sites with swim workouts - maybe someone else can point you in that direction.

For me, a good swim workout is one where I conquer something; whether that's hitting a target pace, correcting an error in my form, or even learning to let go and enjoy the stuff I hate doing (I'm looking at you, breaststroke).
My mentality last year took a huge step forward when I learned to let go of any sort of negative thinking and pursue my goal with positivity.
I'm trying hard to stay there, even though I haven't been in a pool since October. Every negative has a positive if you look for it.
I'm a newbie swimmer so I don't do much other than just swim. I don't even really time myself. I'm working on getting my distance up. Today I swam my furthest ever without stopping at 1300yards. So a good workout to me is when I increase my distance.
