I received my DNA results a few months back with Ancestry and it has helped me with my identity issues. I am a light-skinned, green-eyed Hispanic which somehow can't exist in people's eyes but here I am. The results were mostly what I expected but there were some shockers in there however, highest on the list was Iberian Peninsula, so yup, Hispanic.
I received an email earlier today that mentioned they have narrowed their results even further and FINALLY I have it confirmed right in my face that I am Puerto Rican. They are 95% sure. Now let me say that I never doubted that because one half of my family came to the U.S. from PR in the 1950s and they are proudly Puerto Rican and look it. I feel like I have some facial features that would give it away but since my skin is light I have been questioned by others my whole life. The other side of my family hails from South America but it's mainly the Puerto Rican part that messes people up and they swear I can't be Hispanic. It feels so good knowing that now I have proof to back me up. I can finally say it and mean it. It's like I'm not lost anymore because when I was younger this really messed with my head and my identity.
I'm off to research the rest of the genetic communities I am linked to.
As odd as it sounds, finding out I am a third white kind of fucked with my head for a while. Like, I'm "more white" than somebody with an actual white grandparent.
One of the findings threw me for a loop too. I had zero clue and this part is white as white can be.

Are one of your parents or grandparents biracial? I so want to do this, but the conspiracy theorist in me won't allow it yet.
Tangentially related, my cousins (7 and 13) who have 2 black parents had apparently been telling people at school they were half white. Our great grandmother is half white and their grandfather is really light skinned and they thought he was part white. So they thought that meant they were half white. Kids man. They have it straight now.
In looking at other Assyrian people who took the tests results on my familial links I found that all of them had middle eastern, caucuses italian and Greek and always a small percentage of ashkenazi jewish.
Mine was 50% all together of middle eastern and caucuses which both cover Iraq where my dad is from. I got 5% Ashkenazi Jewish which I expected since Assyrians are semetic people's.
My mom didn't know her father well which is part of my reasoning of doing it. I got 18% west Europe which the research shows me is French and German. I got 17% italian and Greek which I assumed was from my dad but the research shows almost all of my mom's side relations also had that.
The most exciting this for me and my mom was that her grandpa was a chinese immigrant, however we are not east asian at all. Apparently my great grandfather was ethnically Kazakh which is a large minority in China. So it was 20% central asian.
I got 2% Polynesian which I thought was cool too.
It's interesting to see where everyone came from and how many relatives you actually have. I turned out less European than I expected, I was kind of Sad we aren't east asian because I've identified that way for a long time. I understand the whole silk road trade and it's still cool just a bit bummed.

This is why I won't do it. No one in my family is white, so I don't want to hear I have a bunch of slave master blood. My Momma is scared to mail hers in because of me, LOL!!
I am fascinated by this and have wanted to do this for awhile but I'm hesitant. It's difficult to put into words but maybe a part of me is scared of what I might find or that I would feel ashamed? I'm anxious about most everything though so there's that!

Look here lite brite, massah was in your cabin, look at your daddy! hahahahaaa
Momma got hers back. Mostly from Mozambique, Libya and Ethiopia. Only traces of West Africa. I am all over East Africa and the Middle East.

What were the percentages? I know there are some Europeans up in there somewhere. Don't try to hide the truth.
The smallest was European! We are also natives from Guyana in South America too!! I am so flipping please with all my Africa. I think I am lighter because of the Arab's. DesertMoon you hear me? We sistas!

I had a hit for the middle east as well. Very tiny percentage though. My hits for Africa were:
Senegal Africa South-Central Hunter-Gatherers Ivory Coast/Ghana Africa North
I'm going to say my Puerto Rican side is where that came from. No surprise there. I believe the Irish that somehow made it's way into my DNA comes from the PR side as well.
And of course European with Iberian Peninsula being the largest percentage and South America thrown in (expected). It's like I have a drop or a splash of every damn thing except Asian, Pacific Islander, and European Jewish.
I am very curious to know how all this came about. Oh and I most of my relatives that I match are on the Puerto Rican side. I was having a hard time finding any of the South American relations so that has me wondering what is really going on.

Sahara sisters, sounds good! I'm glad your mom tried it in know you were nervous about the results.
