During cheer uniform fittings, multiple girls had a tattoo somewhere. Most of them had it somewhere where clothes normally cover it (they're usually wearing spanx and a sports bra for fittings).
And when I help out at dance recitals, it wasn't unusual to see a tattoo on the older girls.
And these were dancer and cheer types. So I don't think it's that unusual.
Hmm I didn't realize that.
ETA: I think I'm so surprised because my parents are very anti-tattoo and there's absolutely no way they would've EVER let me get one in HS. Heck, they weren't super thrilled about the tattoo I got at 29.
I have 0 tattoos, but in high school my friend group found a place in NH that didn't ID. So.Many.Butterflies.on.Hips. Lolololol
I'm only half through but really their school is the worse. A weird matchmaking survey for Valentine's Day, John Wayne movie watching in class, study hall, working in the office instead of having a class for third period? Communications class? How do they have enough periods in a day to get the basics. You'd think their parents would complain about all of that.

The lack of parent involvement is missing it seems. Which is why I think they need a 2nd season since I want to know what was happening there. But yeah the school was terrible. Freaking Valentine Day survey and restrooms with horrible things on the wall. WTF How did they not see that?

Yes! I mean, parental involvement (as in their actual presence at the school) drops off in HS but for a bunch of UMC parents to be so checked out about classes seems weird. Even Courtney with the pushy dads is taking all of these lame do-nothing classes.

I'm watching this now. I have 2 left and I'm afraid to watch the next one bc I'm pretty sure it's the one that includes the graphic scene. It's really well done and I'm impressed by the all actors playing the teens but I'm having anxiety watching it as a parent. It's scary to think your teen might have this whole, possibly harmful world you know absolutely nothing about. Hannah was portrayed as having a pretty decent relationship with her parents, esp. her mom, and they had no idea she was struggling to this extent or was this unstable Everyone thinks "that won't be my kid" but how can you know for sure? And some of it is ringing true to me even though I was a teen back in the dinosaur ages - esp. the way the boys objectify the girls and treat them like bodies that are just there for their own personal pleasure. It's horrible to think that that dynamic might have gotten worse instead of better over the past twenty years. It's really disturbing as a mom of both genders.

There was horrible graffiti like that on our bathroom walls when I was in hs 20 years ago. I was thinking schools might be more conscientious about that given the increased awareness of bullying but maybe not.
Just finished. It was very powerful. The guidance counselor was the worst. It seems like they left it open for a sequel.
Also per the Internet Alex and Justin are dating IRL which is cute.
That is exactly what I was thinking. I'm guessing the photographer who bought the guns is going to be the focus in the next one. Does the book have a sequel? The movie was so intense, I'm curious if the book has the same intensity.
I read somewhere they are thinking about doing s season two.
I really liked the series. It absolutely stuck with me to the point where I would think about it during the day even when I wasn't watching. I am a high school teacher and I just want to take care of all of my students. I cannot stop thinking about the communication teacher who had that note and didn't really do much. We have to report ALL of those things immediately to the office. Also the teacher who read the poem from the magazine.
I just finished so I am sure there will be other comments I have. But the last episode. my heart hurt so much.
I feel like a season 2 would not be as good because it would have to be a totally different format.
On this note I saw an article whose title was "this didn't need to be 13 episodes" or something like that. And I was all - did you not get that each ep had a specific meaning? It was weird.
Unlike the OA, I want nothing to do with a second season of this.

I loved it, it was brutal and honest and heartbreaking and important. I don't think there needs to be a second season although I think there probably will be. The rape and suicide scenes did me in.

I remember doing this in 9th grade. I completely forget how it ended up, though. Actually all those things sound like normal parts of high school. Office assistant instead of study hall, movies during class, and communications class as an elective don't seem out of the ordinary.
I just finished watching it. Like I watched the last episode during a slow point of my day at work today just to finish it. I think it was really powerful and really not far from reality. It brought up a lot of feelings from high school and I wasn't bullied or anything - just the random mean girl shit and rumors and ugh. I'm 31 and that shit still sticks with me.

I think it sounds unusual for a HS today. Hannah was in study hall, a communications class and an office aid--all one day!
Plus there was references to shop class and auto class, both rarities in 2017 in a "regular" HS.
I think the social things were realistic but the school itself and lack of parental involvement was a serious blast from the past. I wonder when the author went to school?

I haven't finished yet, but my students were talking about it on Thursday. They said the book was better, and that season 2 has to be the B sides of the tapes.

What does this mean?
Keep in mind that I'm only on episode 4, so I have no idea if this is true or not.
They said that Clay only hears one side of the tape, and the second season must be when they all listen to the other side.

What? The B sides were in the show already.
I'm only repeating what they said, and besides not finishing the show, I haven't read the book.

Ok, so I had to go spoil the show, and clearly, I heard them wrong, because the book spoilers and the show spoilers don't really make any sense with that explanation.
Edit: and clearly I'm not watching the show very carefully either
Which is fine but I feel like that's fairly rare. Numberois characters have tattoos. I get that the actors probably had them and they're not going to hide them but that was definitely not a thing at my HS.
And I have a visible tattoo so it's not like I'm shocked or opposed. It's just not something I've seen before.

I teach at a high school, and a ton of my students have tats. At least one per class period and I teach mostly underclassmen, so freshman and sophomores. I can't say any of them are like Tony's, but they have them. I have one kid I call, "Wolfy" because of the beast he has on his arm. It was so well done, I swore it was a stick on one at first.
I watched with my teenagers, we finished today. It was very powerful and opened up a lot of conversation. The last episode crushed me.
I made a comment about how I think every teenager, and parent of teenagers, should watch this. My oldest DD (senior in HS) said that everyone in her school is watching, even the guys, and the teachers are talking about it with them.
I think this is so important: adults talking about it with their kids.
I read an article about how one thing it doesn't do is address mental illness with suicide. I will try to link the article, because it made some points that I hadn't considered.
Working in a HS, I kept asking myself if I would have noticed something/someone like Hannah. Do I have a Hannah now? How would I know? It's opened doors for some conversations that need to happen with teens.
