I can't figure it out. What is causing me to have such flakey skin when I try to wear foundation or bb cream? It looks so bad.
Here's what I'm using:
Day - Either just water or Bioderma Crealine Micellar Water Dr Jart Ceramidin Liquid Mizon Black Snail All-in-one Cream Biore Aqua Rich SPF
Night The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Oil Bioderma Either Paula's Choice Resist Retinol Serum or The Ordinary Azelaic Acid The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid Dr Jart Ceramidin Liquid Mizon Black Snail All-in-one Cream Mizon Snail Recovery Gel
I use Two Faced Hangover Face Primer Foundations - No 7 Airbrush Away or Dior Nude Skin Glowing Makeup BB Cream is Garnier BB Blur
Anything to suggest?
Update:
I have made a few changes to my skincare routine and a few more changes (when things began to irritate my skin) and I'm still going to make a few more changes, but at least one or two things have helped
Morning routine: Missha FTE - 3 layers (working up to the 7 skin technique). I feel like this has truly helped moisturise the skin. Hada Labo Hyaluronic Lotion - still unsure whether I want to use this in the morning as I'm not sure it's working well with other things, but it's helping to lock in moisture Dr Jart Ceramidin Liquid - not sure if I'll keep using this once it's gone (close to it now) or not as it doesn't seem to do much Mizon Black Snail All-in-one Cream - I'm almost out and I'll be replacing it with COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence as I don't think it's helping me much The Ordinary Cold Pressed Rosehip Oil - just started this and I need to figure out how much to use (I overdid it today) Biore Aqua Rich SPF - I'll use this on days it's warmer/humid and mix it up with my fav Shiseido Senka Mineral Water UV Essence SPF50+
Night routine: Missha FTE - 3 layers Hada Labo The Ordinary Rosehip Oil La Roche-Posay Toleriane Riche Soothing Protecting Cream
I've added some face masks once in a while
My skin feels so much better and looks a lot better, though I have more sebaceous filaments as I stopped the acids. Once I finalise a lineup for the summer, I'll slowly add in my actives. I'm trying to mix together a good routine of Asian and non-Asian products. I'm using a lot less makeup right now (I tried one night for going out and the makeup actually rolled up into balls - something didn't play well with either the primer or makeup) and, luckily, my skin looks a lot healthier/less red so I can almost get away with it.
The retinol/acid are the chemical exfoliators. How often do you use them? Maybe back down to twice a week and see if that helps. The all in one cream may also have something in it that is too much with the acid/retinol treatments.

I haven't used the mizon all in one, but I know the recovery gel is pretty light weight. Have you tried a heavier moisturizer? I like stratia liquid gold and dr jart cream.

So I was doing a nightly AHA/BHA (or at least the BHA) + essence + snail etc routine for several months. I was still seeing flaky skin particularly when I used foundation. I had to stop the acids, stick with a ceramide cleaner (Cereve for dry/combo skin) and moisturize in the am and pm (CosRx Birch Sap lotion). The snail gel/moisturizer wasn't cutting it. My skin has been much happier since making these changes about 3 or 4 months ago. I haven't even had my normal tiny white heads - which I always woke up with one or two of them in my cheek/nose/chin area. I was using those CosRx pimple patches like crazy - to the point where I bought a 10 pack in Dec - but I only used 1/4 of one since I bought them!
Listen to the skincare pros but I'd also question the primer. I have dry skin and I frequently flake if I use a primer, especially anything mattifying. The clique supercharge, or something like that, doesn't give me that problem.

Normally yes, but the primer I was using is meant to be super hydrating. I definitely cannot do a matt primer!
I get flakey from tret and I love Goodall's Lasting Water Oil. It's like...water oil - lol. It seems to help with both dryness and dehydration and gives a boost to my other products.

My skin gets flaky when it's dehydrated and needs more water. I solved this problem by using FTE and a hydrating toner. My favs are Secret Key Starting Treatment Essence and Secret Key Milk Brigthening Toner. I pat on a few drops of each morning and night. The bottles are huge and last 6-12 months.

Can you give your skin a break from make-up for a week, add hyaluronic in the morning also, and scale back on the retinoid to see if that helps?
Great minds think alike. I had already decided to bin makeup for the week just to give my face a break.
The Ordinary Hyaluronic was not working in the morning (sticky and seemed to ball up under stuff) so I decided to bin it for the time being and go to my Hong Kong purchased Hada Labo Hyaluronic acid lotion - liking that a lot more (it seems to soak in). I've also added the Cosrx Advanced Snail Mucin Power Essence in the place of the Mizon all-in-one, and I'm using the Cosrx Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask now every night.
I'm also going to use retinoid twice a week, Alzaic acid twice a week (that seemed to also cause issues) and nothing acidic two nights a week.
So far, in the short-run, I seem to have much plumper skin, so we'll see how it goes. thatgirl2478, I have the birch sap lotion in my sight if this doesn't work out as it gets great reviews from others too.
For my flakiness, which is absolutely from dry skin needing help with cell turnover, I use Paula's Choice 10% AHA. I don't even really do it once a week, just when I see that I need it. It blasts off dead, dry skin better than pretty much anything else I've used. I don't use a bunch of other actives when I use that or the next day, to prevent any reactions since my skin is fairly sensitive.
Of course, this recommendation is only if the changes you're making don't help/hello enough. The only retinol I'm using is in the Paula's Choice Skin Recovery antioxidant serum. Anything more is too intense for my skin and causes sensitivity, redness, and flaking/peeling. I do use BHA or AHA daily though (both PC, if I'm using the Resist 5% AHA I don't use that every day).

If you can't pinpoint any product that's causing the dryness, could it maybe be hormonal? Fluctuations in hormones always make my skin super dry and flakey.

It's probably partially going into perimenopause, but I think I just need better product for dry dehydrated skin versus the products themselves causing issues (though I do think acids may cause some of the issue).
