We have swimming this morning, I called and all the pools are open as normal, swimming lessons are still going on.
Both my grandmothers were really paranoid about lightening, like we weren't allowed to go near any windows, touch anything metal or use any running water during a storm if we were with them. I'm not typically that worried in a storm but hanging out in a pool during a pretty intense storm has me questioning things for sure.
Would you still go?
Class is in an hour, this is what the current radar looks like
I would hope your pools would have lightning requirement!. I know if ours see it or hear thunder you have to clear the pool for 30 minutes until after the last strike.
It may clear out in time but they should delay a cancel if it doesn't.
laurensmomma The pool is inside! Outside I wouldn't even be considering this!
I don't have any facts on the running water, possibly a myth? I just have vivid memories of both of them being really paranoid during storms. We never shower/bathe during a storm I we can help it, so hanging out in a giant electrical conductor is making me paranoid!
The storm has been going on since 1am with no signs of lifting based on the radar.
Well, chances are that will mostly blow over by an hour, right? If so, I'd go. Pools here are mostly indoors, so too bad you don't have that.
I've never heard about the no running water thing during a storm. Any idea what that's about?
Thetes like a 1 in 10 million chance lighting can hit your house and if you have metal water pipes it can conduct electricity to the water. It's really really rare and people rarely die from it. More people used to get injured by corded phones than water.
Oh inside. I would go! Most the water inlets on the pool should be plastic which means lightning can't get to the water in the pool. Also almost all large buildings have lightning protection systems which means little metal rods on the roof that get hit, and have wires that run the electricity into the ground.

Oh, then I would definitely go, lol. But, I'm not that worried about lightening. :0)

I feel like we followed this rule when I was younger as well... but not sure why!
Our gyms policy is the same as blane12. They close the pools for 30 minutes after lightning. I never would have thought of it for an indoor pool either.

We went and we're not electrocuted! His swim trunks fell out of the bag though so I ended up spending $16 on a pair of boring navy swim trunks because he refused to use the swim diaper another mom offered us.
