Will they explain the rapist? It seemed like Offred knew him - Or was she just upset with the whole process?
Also, why are they tearing down all the churches when it is a religious based society? I guess its all old testament based, so is it Christianity that is banned?
And what about the cookie? Did Offred just not want to eat it because it was offered in such a demeaning way? Cause it looked tasty, lol.
I only watched the first two episode, but I am looking forward to watching the third tonight. It is really interesting. I had started to watch the doc "Jesus Camp" but I had to turn it off because the "preachers" reminded me that there are people who would love to go all in on this type of set up.
jigsy I believe they are tearing down Catholic churches.
I don't think she knew the rapist. I can't remember from the book, but I think it is a way that the handmaids release their rage over their own enslavement.
I think she didn't want the cookie because it was basically given to her like she was a dog getting a treat or a small child.
also Jesus Camp will fuck you up man. That doc was intense.

I watched all 3 episodes yesterday. Probably not the best choice as I'm 39 weeks pregnant and being induced today lol. I really like the casting - even though I pictured the commander and Serena Joy older in the books. I've never been a big Elisabeth Moss fan though. She's fine but meh.
Definitely unsettling, especially the protest scene where they just started shooting people

In the book she spent a lot of time questioning if he really even did commit a crime, or was he being used as a scapegoat to rile up the Handmaids and get further buy in to the regime. He never comes up again as far as I can recall.

I was kind of wondering that. Because, Look, I am not a violent person, but if, after all the oppression that you have to go through to end up as a handmaiden, I was faced with a man who raped one of my sisters, taking away yet another piece of any sense of humanity one could cling to in times like that, I sure as shit wouldn't shed a tear for him.
But, I can also see how this dude could potentially be just another pawn in the whole game and the expectation of beating him to death is also taking away that humanity.

Yeah, in the book she says he looks drugged. He struggles to say "I didn't...." then kind of blacks out I think. It's at the very end of the book, so there's not really an opportunity to bring it up again, but Ofwarren thinks he isn't really a rapist, but rather a dissenter, and the government uses the rage of the handmaids to kill him (while making the handmaids feel more enfranchised).

I thought she was upset about the apparent death of Moira and this was the only way she could really get that anger out.
The religion thing is specific. Rory/Offglen mentions that some Baptist rebels in the South were recently taken out and then they show a priest hanging next to the gay man and the doctor. I think both churches that they mentioned being demolished were Catholic Churches.

I'm fairly certain that everyone who read the books pictured the Commander and Serena Joy as older. The movie made in the 90's had Robert Duvall and Faye Dunaway in those roles, so yeah.
