The nurse told me today she wanted to do the hygiene and puberty lesson this afternoon. My teaching partner was out (again!), but fortunately there was a sub, so it was just a matter of putting the boys in one room and the girls in another.
Sitting there trying to keep a straight face while the boys were bursting out laughing? Hardest part of my job. I was not expecting to do that today.
Every day this week, something's been sprung on me. I'm so glad the week is over.
It's a little easier for the girls. They're grossed out by the idea of blood, and yes, they giggled when cartoon bras were shown, but their video didn't talk about "your penis will get longer," "it's called an erection," and "some people call that a wet dream."
One thing I'm grateful for is that I wasn't the one who had to do the lesson. I just sat there and made sure they behaved.
All the kids were pretty stoked to get their own deodorant samples. A couple of girls actually put it on right then and there.
I don't know that they do that around here. I know they get sex Ed in health, but my 6th graders stink. I remember getting little locker packs of Teen Spirit deodorant and Clearisil when I was in middle school

This was through Always/ Proctor and Gamble. The nurse got it through this link: www.pgschoolprograms.com/ She told them how many boys and how many girls. The samples also come with little booklets.
They separate the boys and girls? I very much remember us all together in grade 5 and every other grade they did it/sex ed.
There was a coed video available, so I assume some people do it together. When I was in 5th, it was separated, but 7th grade sex ed was coed.
These lessons were solely focused on personal development, and I'm really glad the nurse separated them. Neither sex would have been comfortable watching the videos, much less asking questions, if the opposite sex had been there. As it was, when it was time for her to ask the boys if they had questions, I excused myself. I didn't think they would want to ask any questions with their female teacher sitting there.

I only taught 5th for a year but I remember "the talk" day. Thankfully we have a male 5th grade teacher so I only had to be with the girls. I can imagine the boy one was super awkward.
