Our new house (!! ) has a mudroom area, just off the front door. It used to be a laundry room, but they moved laundry downstairs and blocked off the hookups. The cabinets are pretty large, starting below eye-level. It leads off into a half-bath, and has a door for the garage.
I'm going to need to put something there, otherwise it'll look empty. Plus, I want something that will look attractive and be functional for storage of daily things. Right now, they have a large shoe organizer.
Plus, we need to repaint this room. It's supposed to be the formal dining room, but we're gong to use it as office. It's a connecting room between the white living room (likely going to have blue couches) and the light blue kitchen. I was thinking of maybe a complementary color, like cocoa with white trim? Kind of modernize it a bit.
For the mud room, I would want some kind of bench or chair. You could do a storage-type bench with a lift up seat or one that has cubbies underneath for shoes.
For the office, I personally dislike dark walls. Is the trim painted in the other rooms? If not, I think the white trim would look out of place. I would stick with a light color for the walls and go darker with the curtains and wall hangings/pictures

I'm hesitant to suggest a bench in the mudroom because those cabinets look pretty low and I foresee a lot of banged heads with a bench. Unless you make the bench slightly deeper than the cabinets.
Can you build a custom (or use shelving type things) cubbies? One for each person. Like this maybe?

I was thinking of putting a bench in the foyer, which is why I was trying to figure out what to do with this space. I'd love to just rip out the cabinets, and putting in something more custom, but that might take a while to get done.
If you want just storage. Ikea has some good shoe storage units. I forget what the one we have is called but it doesn't take up much room and holds lots of shoes.
If you are planning to have shoe storage and bench in the foyer, this is a cute idea to occupy the space until you can do customs or whatever you ultimately want.

Even though you plan to have a bench in the foyer, I would still do a whole or a half bench in the mud room, especially if it has extra storage.
For the office, I like the cocoa idea, but also really like a medium blue/grey with white trim. The textured wall paper that fryjack2 posted looks really nice.
