ladybug, I am so sorry. How long has he been there?
Do you have any recourse? I don't know employment laws at all but I always thought it was super hard to be fired for performance reasons. As in, it has to be documented the poor performance and in this case it sounds like nothing was documented at all.

Apparently they said they had documentation (but he's never been spoken too and definitely never signed anything. I had to sign something at work when I got in trouble once for something super minor so I assume that's the norm but I'm not sure) and said something about CA being an "At will" state. He didn't question it in the moment because he was so shocked. He's considering emailing the president (who he was on good terms with) or maybe asking a lawyer.
Thankfully his parents and my mom have already said they'll help when/if we need it, his mom's words were "you guys won't starve and your rent won't go unpaid" so we're very lucky and loved. We had our usual weekly counseling session tonight which was great because it helped to be able to talk through it together and with someone else. We'll be okay
