Our main concern with this is along the lines of one parent being home with the kids and becoming incapacitated or unable to move for whatever reason. If our personal cells are not in plain sight or easy to grab, we want the kids to have a known location where they can find a phone to call for help. It's more about having a central location than just adding a phone, if that makes sense.
Ugh, H and I really should have something once DS is older. I have epilepsy and haven't had a seizure in 11 years. If/when I do, he needs to be able to call 911 & H easily & quickly.
Yeah, I mean, neither of us have any medical conditions, but I can just see a scenario where one of us falls down the stairs and is knocked unconscious or some other freak accident. One of the boys is home, but can't find that parent's cell phone and is panicked. I want them to have a known location of a phone so that they aren't freaking out trying to locate one in the house, you know?

Yes, although it's a VoIP line not an actual landline. So if the Internet/power goes out, it doesn't work. It is actually cheaper to have an Internet service bundle with it than without it, for us.
I use it for conference calls a lot because the handset is comfortable, and we give that number whenever we are required to provide a phone number but don't want to give out our cell phones.

no but i'm considering it for 911 purposes only and not ponying up the money for FULL landline service. you can now text the local PD which is very cool but for emergencies, i'm leaning for a landline.

Can you elaborate on this? Why can't you use your cell phone for 911?
I think we actually pay for one because we got a better price with Comcast's "Triple Play" than just internet and cable. We don't actually give out the number or have a phone plugged into the jack.
We had a landline at our old condo because our cell phone service was shit there. I would run upstairs every time my phone rang to find the sweet spot to get a decent connection, but it still dropped calls sometimes. It was maddening. We got a landline when I broke my ankle.

I can use my cell but more for dd if she's w a babysitter OR her dad shows up and I can't get to my cell. At almost 8 she's too young for a cell of her own

Or if your cell is dead or you can't find it immediately. Any phone plugged in to a jack should be able to call 911 regardless of whether or not you have a plan and honestly everyone should have one set up in case of an emergency.
First, we like having a 'central' number for our DD to use. Second, I can't have my mother knowing my cell phone number. We have a strained relationship and she's very intrusive. I need the ability to ignore her when necessary. Third, it's bundled and it's cheap. The last reason is kind of dumb, really. We recently moved back into my childhood home. The number at the house is the one that we had when I was a kid and I can't let it go. It would bother me a lot for someone else to have it.

We do but never really use it actually. We used to need it because H needed t be able to receive faxes but that's no longer an issue. It is bundled and apparently it is cheaper to have it than not. Occasionally I use it because cell signal craps out sometimes and I also want DD to be able to have a phone for when I leave her semi alone and home (meaning with her 17 y/o cousin who sleeps a lot.
Yes, both I and my father have an old fashioned, plug into the jack, corded landline phone that requires no electricity. My father's was extremely helpful to neighbors after Superstorm Sandy because his condo complex was without power for 5 days. Also, it's been the same number for 38 years and he sometimes still tells people to call "NE4-xxxx"
Yes. It's part of the cable package. When we were renting we didn't use it, but now that we have the house I feel more secure with it. Especially bc I tend to keep my cell on vibrate and if there was an emergency at night, I'm reachable to family.
