So ... I haven't been active on GBCN in a while (I was in International Living), but recently I've been in a SN community at TCF (formerly from TB). And that place looks like it's imploding so we are looking for a new home.
Thought it might be a good idea to start an intro thread, especially if anyone is currently checking in here, albeit quietly.
Hi, I'm freezorburn. I have a 5 year old son who is on the autism spectrum. He's verbal, and we're expecting him to be in a mainstream classroom when he starts K in the fall. Mostly he struggles with transitions and social skills. A bit of echolalia. He loves trains and legos, running me ragged. Hope this place will work out as a new home!

Yes, come here!
What's going on over there??
It's complicated? It all started with a state of the forum thread, since people were concerned about things stagnating, something about a website and/or blog that never got going. And then there was a mod got stripped of her powers and not sure who is telling the truth but it's gotten very ugly and dysfunctional.
1) TCF was started with a grand plan of a content site to drive traffic. That never happened. Not many newbs came and meanwhile the snarkiness drove lots of people away, as happens. 2) Regs got pissed, demanded action to drive new traffic. Admins were silent, then basically said eff you. 3) Regs moved to ScaryMommy. Swarmed in, took over. SM Regs were mostly not happy, but admins were open to them but clear they were not making a big content site or making big changes to drive new traffic. Some SM Regs said SM is over-modded so it may be not much better than TB, but the consensus is what's done is done and they should just go there. That is specifically on Parenting which has the most traffic. The smaller boards seem less happy to go to SM. 4) It came out that an old demodding of a mod on one of the AIF boards was wrong and the admin over there may be a lying liar who lies a lot. Seems to be the nail in the coffin.

akafred, thank you for the Cliff notes! I got lost and now I don't have to wade through a million pages. Though I'm curious which admin turned out to be the one who lied?
Anyhow. I'm macchiatto. I've posted on this board a bit but it's been a while. I have fraternal twin boys. One of them is typically developing. The other has hypotonia, anxiety, fatigue, and was recently diagnosed with ASD after being "at risk for autism" for years. His autism is mild/borderline but he has delays in several areas and is currently re-starting PT, OT, speech for social skills, and finally starting CBT for the anxiety and possibly ABA.
Yes, I make it. I'm here no just because one of my kids is on the spectrum. I'm here because I'm following freezorburn I,m been with her seen TB. Hope more people will come and join here.
Hello! I'm also coming over from TCF. I didn't post very often on SN, but found the information and people there to be so helpful. Anyway, I have a 3.5 son who was diagnosed with ASD just after he turned two. He is doing well now after EI that included ABA, and an ASD toddler school. He only quilfied for speech services during his recent IEP transition and we are seeing how things are going for now.

Hi. I registered over here from TCF too. I'm not extremely active on the SN board but I do read it. I have an almost 3.5 year old with ASD and possibly a genetic syndrome that has not been diagnosed. So hello everyone!

Hi all. I hopped on in case TCF does implode. I have two children, DS (4) and DD (1). DS has sensory processing differences, hypotonia, and difficulty with some transitions. He's never been flagged for ASD but I'm just monitoring. His cousin seems to have ASD but was not formally diagnosed.

Aw, Zara. I'm flattered you would follow me here. (((hugs))) And glad to have an old friend along for the journey.SaveSave
Welcome. I lurked a bit on SN on TCF but never posted. I just tried to wade through some of the insanity going on there and can't make heads or tails of it.
There are quite a few SN parents on the MM board. There used to be a regular check-in. Hopefully some will visit here.
I have a 6yo with HFA and a 10yo who's newly dxed with ADHD.
auntie hasn't posted since she posted something speculating that Baron Trump has ASD. A few assholes made cracks that maybe she has ASD.
ETA: I hope she comes back. She's been incredibly helpful to so many.
Welcome all! It would be nice to get life in this board again. There are quite a few moms all over the boards with SN kids. I have two spectrum kids, one 7 and one 5.
Welcome everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing some action here! As someone mentioned above there is a SN check in on MM Moms (originally a spin off of money matters, but all parents post there), but it would be great to have a more active sn community here
DD was diagnosed with refractory epilepsy and partial focal seizures around 18 months, lots of testing, lots of medications that didn't work before we "fired" our neurologist, found a new one and started pushing down the path of getting her qualified as a surgical candidate. Along the way, we discovered that the seizures were all originating from a previously overlooked brain tumor.
She had a successful surgery (craniotomy and a resection to remove a tumor about the size of a marble) in January'16 and has been seizure free ever since. We've got some follow-up imaging this summer and then hopefully we'll get the all clear to start weaning her off her last medication.
I'm not sure how much we belong on SN anymore, but I still like to lurk and check in. I had a lot of questions on our journey and not very many resources for getting them answered.
Hey. I'm pistol, formerly pistolpackinmomma on TCF. I never posted in SN but was starting to lurk as we are just starting down the path of SPD (sensory seeking) and anxiety for my 4.5 year old. Someone had suggested I read The Out of Sync Child and I just started it today. Wow is that mind blowing right now. We start OT next week and I made him a weighted blanket which seems to be helping him some as well. I'm hopeful to see an improvement with OT as well.

I finally made it over here!
I was Sailor Saturn at TB and was mamaturtle at TCF. I decided to keep mamaturtle here, too, so that way you all know it is me.
My DS is 8 years old and has ASD. DS was dx with PDD-NOS before they changed to the DSM5. We will be seeking medication intervention for ADHD on Tuesday and I am scared for him. Someone please hold my hand.

Good luck next week! Let us know how it goes.SaveSave
Made it back over here from TCF (posted here ages ago). I have a 5.5yo with ASD, ADHD, and possibly some other stuff.
Glad to see you back! Just want to say that I have always appreciated your self-care check-ins, even though I rarely posted in them. Because I've been pretty lousy at self-care, but it was good to have the reminder. Wasn't sure if/when you would be back, so I went ahead and started a couple, to get the board warmed up. Feel free to take them over again if you are so inclined!SaveSave

Awww! Thanks! I've been pretty lousy at taking care of myself lately too. If I can only get time to post one thing on here each week, it really ought to be the check-in, whether starting it or just popping in. Thank you for starting it when I have dropped the ball. Although I hope to be more reliable now, I am sure I will drop the ball on starting the check-in plenty of more times, so don't hesitate to start it. :-)
freezorburn reminded me that many from TCF moved here. I wasn't planning to make the move but I missed my support groups too much, plus that whatchamacallit shenanigans with posts in the last week or so ended my desire to keep checking in on the SN board there.
I have a 4 year-old ds with Down Syndrome, plus a 20 year-old ds and a 25 year-old dd. Both of my older two had IEPs for different reasons so I have times where I feel like I should know all I need to know about IEPs and SpEd for my youngest and times where I feel like I know nothing since his needs are different from the older two.
I caved and moved over; I can't even remember what I was on TB, was mirandahobbes on TCF.
DS is 9, PDD-NOS when he was 3, ADHD/GAD when he was 6.
I do enjoy the online groups. It is so helpful to get an unbiased but informed opinion. I recently made the jump into "real time" support groups. My (large) school district has one for parents of ASD kids and WOW are those ladies sharp. It's a bit intimidating. Think CEO's and lawyers who quit their careers and devote themselves full-time to their kids. Now they're running fundraisers, lobbying Congress, and starting ASD peer mentor programs. Meanwhile I'm proud I styled my hair this morning. Anyway, it's been a wealth of information!
mamaturtle, you've got this. Medication was a complete game-changer for us. I had no idea DS had ADHD; I just thought boys were difficult! Everyone, even medication nay-sayers like my parents, says DS is a different kid on meds- totally mellow, willing to do nearly anything I ask him, almost never melts down.
