I've dyed my hair since I was 16, I'm now 40, and my poor scalp needs a break (I have psoriasis), as does my wallet. Do you have opinions or tips? If you've grown it out, did you do anything special? Or, do you think having gray hair is just an unnecessary concession to aging? Like, why age myself like that?
I've got naturally medium neutral brown hair, which I get dyed a medium golden brown with highlights. I'm only about 10% gray. My hair is curly and frizzy, and I wear it both curly and blown out. I was thinking to ask my stylist to dye it my natural color one last time and tone the highlights to be more subtle/neutral.

I'm thinking about going full on in 1-1/2 years (age 50). I have at least 50% or more grey (more toward the front (probably 75%) than the back (probably about 25-30%)). I have gone on pinterest and looked up going grey, as there are a lot of suggestions on how to do it. I have a friend who is almost entirely grey and she looks fabulous and it doesn't age her. I think it depends on the grey and how you take care of it.
I fully intend not to dye my hair. I like my natural color too much to fuck with it, gray or no gray. (I got my first gray hair when I was 16 or so. I've had a lot of time to think about this despite being "youngish" Currently have...a sprinkling? Mostly concentrated in a patch just off my part in the front) I've lately taken to mentally noting whenever I see somebody out and about or in a photo letting their gray show - I've decided it doesn't actually make people look any older than they actually are. I'm in my mid30's. I look like i"m in my mid30's. I'm ok with that. When I'm in my 40's I'll probably look 10 years older than I do now, because I WILL be 10 years older than I am now. That's ok too. Etc. I don't see the point in trying to look younger for the rest of my life just because I left my 20's. At least it means I can forget my ID and still buy a bottle of wine.
I have maybe 10% Grey and am allergic to hair dye, so I can't have it touch my scalp. I've started just getting highlights and lowlights foiled. It helps to hide the Grey so it blends in. Not sure what I will do when I get more Grey.
I am interested to see your results! I have been thinking about this a lot lately myself. I have a sensitive scalp that seems to be bothered by the color more and more each time. I asked my stylist and she says I am about 25-30% gray (with more coming in in the front). I'm only 36. I used to be able to go 9 or so weeks in between visits when I felt like I really needed it. Now it is more like 6-7.

DH thinks my greys are cute. I have dark brown hair. I am not sure I want to keep them, I am actually considering dying my hair silver/lavender (I watch a few bloggers who have done this, like Thataylaa and MrKongsMom...esp. that second one looks great)
