I am very irrational lately as I know this is my privilege speaking, but I can't help but say it.....it is fucking bullshit that my child's life is less important than half the people on this board's children (assuming half the women/men here are white...I was doing a quick count). It is so raw and I can't believe this is still the US, but I can.
We need serious reforms to how these cases are brought. While we should focus on changing society, in the short term, we need to fix who brings these cases. We need prosecutors who can cut through racial biases and who are independent from the police department at issue.
Also: let this be a reminder of what happens when you brag about getting out of jury service.

Yes. And, since I am dgaf today....I think you are shit if you brag about it. Shit.

I just can't understand this verdict. Yes, the prosecutors have a high burden of proof, but this is absurd. Did the prosecution get dicked over on jury instructions or MILs? I just find it so disheartening that people are so f'ing scared/racist that they would let police get away with this. Their job is to protect and serve, not kill. There is video evidence showing precisely that the shooting was not justified.
And if the NRA was actually committed to their ideals, they would be livid about this. The government just killed a man for legally owning a gun.

I read that there was a video of the officer saying he never saw a gun. The prosecutor apparently rested without admitting it, then couldn't get it in during defense case-in-chief. I'm struggling to understand why.
I've been before this particular judge hundreds of times from my practicing days. I can't imagine a situation where he wouldn't let it in for impeachment purposes.

So...
I just read that. Was Yanez's defense that he felt threatened bc Castile said he had a gun or because Yanez saw the gun? If the former, a prior statement also saying he didn't say it wouldn't be impeachment. Maybe the prosecution expected the latter and were saving it for impeachment for effect, and it totally backfired. Risky move.
That article gives me the impression the jury found Yanez highly credible. Crazy the defense let him testify. Guess it worked.

Both, but all reports I've read say he explicitly said on the stand he saw the gun.

Well, there goes that theory. I need to stop trying to make sense of things.
What the fuck do we have to do? How the fuck do we change this? Something has GOT to change. They were hung 24 hours ago. Hung. SOMEONE was standing up. What made them give up?
There has to be a better system that actually dispenses justice. Godfuckingdamnit.
I've been trying to put this into words for the past 20 minutes.
I mean, I'm not surprised this is the verdict. But I feel so hopeless because I don't know what we can actually do.
Well, You and I specifically (and others in our state) can rally for the specific law to change. The law about how cops approach a situation. or, you know, run for office and get it changed.

This is what I want to know. Someone(s) was a holdout. I have never served on a jury, but I want to know what made them change their decision. Did they want to go home? Were they being bullied? Why not just continue to hold out and make it a hung jury? To me that would have been better than not guilty. At least I would know that at least 1 of the 12 knew this was wrong.
Also, fuck the NRA. Where are they? They defended George Zimmerman's right to gun down an unarmed black teenager. What about Philando's right to legally carry the firearm for which he had a permit? I guess the second amendment only applies for white people.
I am still haunted by the video his girlfriend took. Her ability to remain calm was incredible and a matter of life and death for her and her child. But fuck. She never should have faced that.

where are they ever? They're useless pieces of shit. You have to be white and male to be protected by them. Congress can also fuck off. Their lack of ability to do a damn thing, R or D, useless.
