Many people have said that if you can afford it, get the balcony. I've been on 2 cruises, and DH and I are going on one this Dec (all have been/are interior rooms).
When I've been on online websites for cruises, they tell you "guaranteed balcony stateroom" at a lower price, but then it's "balcony stateroom 8B" and so on (which gets pricier.

Ditto pp, just book the guaranteed balcony room. We always do that, and we usually end up on floor 7 or 8 near midship which is what we're looking for anyway. I think the price goes up the pickier you get about which room/floor/area of the ship etc...

unless you want a specific part of the ship or floor it's fine to get the guaranteed rather than specific. i prefer certain areas of the ship-not near elevators or stairs etc.... near to the sstiars that go to the pool.

I usually book last minute, so my friend/agent is able to look to see the inventory. If there are lots of undesirable rooms open, I'll pick a room. If not, I'll do the guarantee. I did a guarantee a few weeks ago and ended up with one of the top rooms in the category.
