3 days into cloth & we've had a little set back. M has developed a rash. First is was just a small red area, yesterday it spread to his whole bottom.
I think it might be a reaction to the laundry detergent? We used Rockin Green Bare Naked Babies. I had a sample so I washed with 1/4 of the packet, hot/cold & extra rinse cycle. (the packet said it would do 2-4 HE loads) I have a few sample of Country Save so we'll switched to that now.
Last night I re-washed all of the clean diapers, 2 hot/cold cycles with extra rinse & no soap. We did bare butt time last night for an hour. At daycare today we're doing disposables with diaper cream to give it a chance to clear up.
If it matters the cds we have are: Bum Genius 4.0 pockets, FuzziBunz pockets, Thirsties Duos. I feel bad, he didn't have rash problems with the disposables. What else should I be doing?
I have no experience with CD's, but have been buying them and reading all about them. I hear that rashes are common when you're first trying them out - and often a detergent switch can help.
It could be any number of things. Detergent, reaction to the specific material of the CDs, etc. I'd wait for it to clear up, change detergents in the mean time, and then go slowly with the CDs using only one kind at a time to see if it is a material reaction.
Also, are you sure daycare is changing him often enough? You need to change more frequently with CDs. They won't be as dry as disposables, even the stay dry ones.
Oh no! My first guess would be the detergent. I've never heard anything good about RnG. My second guess would be the suedecloth in the BGs. If it's the suedecloth or the wetness, fleece liners should help, but you probably don't want to have to use them all the time. I hope you figure it out... this stinks that you're having issues right away!
They change every 2 hours, is that enough? (change immediately with BM)
that's what we did/ do. Dd was also getting a rash and it was detergent. We now to prerinse cold, hot with extra rinse and free and clear detergent and then a final rinse with vinegar. Also, we do not cd overnight. That was our main rash culprit.

Which free & clear detergent do you use? We use Tide Free for the rest of our clothes but I thought it wasn't the best option for cds.
I would suspect the suedecloth - I think BG are suedecloth.
I wouldn't blame the detergent because there's really nothing in a scent-free RnG. It wouldn't hurt to try the Tide Free if it's a powder (don't use liquid, that really will cause problems).
We had detergent rash, too. I would up Not using any regularly and just using Oxy clean or bleach every couple weeks. I did extra extra rinses on hot and line dried for bacteria killing.

We use liquid Tide Free and nothing has happened? Am I doing something wrong. We have been using them for a year.
Cloth diaperers can be a really superstitious lot. Me included.
Yup, no repelling. I heard that it was fine if you have hard water and ours is hard. I actually heard that those fancier cloth diaper specific detergents don't work as well if you have hard water because they won't clean the diaper as well. So you need to buy commercial stuff since it is stronger.
It was actually the snap that faces out so I never used it. (what is it for anyway)
Does the Velcro hold up well? I know for some brands it needs to be replaced more often.
One of the rise snaps? You can use those to make the diaper shorter/smaller for younger babies.
Most of my velcro is still working well after over a year of use. The laundry tabs don't really work, but I just fasten the diapers inside out. I did have to replace the hook-side of about 5/25 of them at around the 12 month mark. The loop side still looks new (no crazy fuzziness like I see in photos of other brands).
My only Kawaii complaint is I bought some square tab original in snaps about 6 or 8 months ago and they're delaminating. I didn't use them a whole lot, either, and treated them the same as the rest. The downside of a cheap china brand is that they don't really stand behind them... but I paid like $3 for those diapers, so I still can't really complain (they were through a co-op and didn't include inserts, so they were really cheap).

BGs are suede cloth. They did a limited edition run of fleece dipes a few years back, but that appears to have been a one shot thing.
RE liquid tide vs powder (or any detergent, liquid vs powder), in general powder detergents are better. To make liquid detergents, they put the powder detergent in a liquid suspension, which basically means if you use liquid detergent, you are adding more non-detergent goop to your laundry. so for finicky CDs, it makes sense to avoid that and use powder.
That said, I used both liquid and powder on my CDs. As long as you do maintenance rinsing/stripping every few months, it likely doesn't make a difference either way.

I don't know how long suedecloth reactions take to clear up, but once it is cleared up, it should come back in BGs but not happen in FB (if it is a suedecloth issue).
If you're already using something, I wouldn't bother with the coconut oil. All I ever had was the oil and a more heavy duty zinc cream. I've been lucky and DS has an ass of steel.
