Ugh so before kids my h and I would go away a lot- a few weekends a month, road trip, camp, etc With one kid we still went a lot but cut back especially with Luke's allergies it was hard to eat out so often A is 2.5 we have tried to continue our travel but he's a miserable traveler. He doesn't sleep well in his pack n play (up every hour), doesn't sleep well with one of us, doesn't nap, doesn't eat then is do overtired from being up every hour that he's grumpy all day. It makes hotels awful because I worry he will wake others and we are all exhausted. He also can only handle about 1.5 hrs in the car before freaking out and gets carsick on curvy roads Do we keep suffering hoping he will get used to it while exhausting ourselves? Quit traveling which will depress me? I'm hoping he grows out of this it's really tough. So far this year we've been away once a month hoping he would get used to it but this kid loves his room, school/daycare, routine etc He doesn't sttn at home either but it's 1x a night about 4nights a week not this bad
So we were the same exact way with C. She's now 3y 2mo and this last trip we just got back from was amazing! She did really well. She still had moments but so much better. What helped was tons of snacks, kindle mounted on the headrest for movies, color wonder coloring books, water wow books, color blast books, and a blanket and teddy to snuggle when she needed naps. The worst part every driving day was when she was tired, she would cry bc she wanted to nap when we got home. Lol. Poor thing wanted to lay down. Or she would wake up when she hadn't napped enough and would be cranky for awhile. Other than that we did 2 8 hour days on the way out, and 2 on the way back and it wasn't painful. Hopefully he'll grow out of it. She also sleeps in bed with G and if it's at a hotel I put a pillow under the sheet so she doesn't roll out and then G is on the other side (she actually knocked G off a full size bed tho, poor G). I think a real bed helps too. Good luck, I hope things get easier.
thanks I hope so. we have a trip planned in august but then we might try to take it easy for a few months and try again around christmas when he's a little older. I want them to share a bed so bad but they both won't have anything to do with it.
I'm sorry. Have you tried him in a little cot or blow up bed? A started sleeping awful in the PnP right after 2 and did pretty good in a blow up bed.
H is not a great traveler either, he's almost 2, and I really want to do some trips next summer, but I'm afraid he won't be any better by then. He really needs to be in a dark room alone to sleep well and that's pretty hard to find on vacations!

we haven't tried a blow up bed, he's still in his crib at home. We do have one of those cots but he's never slept very long on it. I guess we could try that next time. thanks for the idea. Is H in his crib at home? We have really big trip plans for next year so I need this kid to lose some of his routine lol. I know it sounds ridiculous but the idea of not traveling is really tough for me and he makes it such an exhausting, not worth it trip.
Ditto to the airbnb vs. hotel rental. Benjamin in particular needs his own space. Hotels are ok in transit, but we try to get places that have a suite or living area so we can put him in a separate space.
They both have a travel lovey and blanket that they sleep with at home too, we take the ok to wake clock for B - in part as a nightlight and in part because he will wake at 4 am rather than 7 in strange places without it, we travelled with glowsticks for the better part of 2 years to help with being afraid of the dark, and we play lullabies on a Kindle fire at home for white noise that we also take with us for travel.
At my parent's house the boys share a room, and they have a bed tent for Benjamin. It helps give him his own space - less distracted by E while falling asleep, and stays asleep longer if E wakes up early. I was going to check and see if it fits with the cot we use for travel because it may help in hotel rooms too then.
