I have recently began learning to crochet, thanks to youtube. I can do a chain and a single crochet. What patterns would you recommend for a very beginner?
I would start with a dishcloth mentality. They are small enough that you will feel accomplished when you finish one, and you can use just one stitch type when you're practicing.
What made you interested in crochet (not in a snotty way- ha- but, what drew you in)? I was pregnant with my first and was all about baby hats and toys, so I jumped right in and started with simple versions of those two things. Almost all amigurumi toys are doable with your skills- some will obviously be more challenging than others, but, doable. You just need to learn how to increase and decrease, and to keep going "in the round" instead of stopping and flipping. Easy peasy!
My first crocheted baby hats were embarrassingly bad, so bad that I was inspired to learn to knit! But, I absolutely loved crocheting toys when my kids were little- I have a 7yo DD, too, she still LOVES IT when I make her toys/softies. Have you poked around Ravelry?
cmeon, I don't know really. I was looking for a hobby that would be easy for me to pick up and put down and didn't take a lot of brain activity after work lol. I've always liked crafts and would love to sew but I have never been successful that that so here I am. I did a little dish cloth yesterday and it looks pretty good so I think I'm going to move to a simple baby blanket pattern I found online.
Ravelry is a social media sort of platform for knitters/crocheters/weavers. It's really fun to poke around and see what other people are working on, what's new in the pattern/yarn world. Great search features, lots and lots and lots of free (and purchasable) patterns, and often helpful comments about errors, tweaks, and experiences that other people encountered. It's just a nice, free resource for inspiration.
There's no reason you shouldn't start a baby blanket, if that's what you want to do, it's just a big wash cloth.

One of my favorite projects from when I first learned crochet was a small mesh grocery bag. I was really pleased with the result of this pattern. Made a few as gifts and still have a couple for myself. I love that it doesn't take up much room in my purse but it can expand to hold quite a lot. Strong, too.
