I know we've talked about this before, but I have a FWP.
B has a pottery barn book bag he got last year. It's not personalized. Well at the end of the school year, they told us Someone had bedbugs and to put all clothes, socks, book bags, etc in the dryer for 30min when we got home. Unbeknownst to me, one day my MIL put some crayons in the small pocket. She didn't say anything, and I only checked the large pocket and then threw it in the dryer. Obviously, this did not go well and his book bag now has melted crayon colors all over it. They're not waxy, but stained into the bag.
My dilemma is: should I get him a new bag, or just send him in the stained one? The old bag is fully functional, but I hate the stains literally all over it. Plus, I would probably personalize it since his name didn't stay well on the inside. It seems like a waste of money, but the old bag does bother me. I realize this a stupid problem:)
I would buy a new one. Maybe get a large so it'll last a bit longer if you had a small before? I think a lot of people get their kids a new bag every year.
I would buy a new one, and have it personalized locally. I've heard/seen tons of PB personalization horror stories. We sent DD with a large to PreK, so I would get a bigger size and go for new!

Thank you for justifying me you guys!
Ugh - good point about the personalization. It also costs $9.50 I think to personalize at PB which I thought was a lot (though I admit I have no idea what personalizing costs nowadays. I thought it used to be $7 at PB. It's just a pain in the ass to have it done elsewhere. You don't think a large would be too big? I hadn't considered sizing up....

Here's Eleanor on the 1st day of PreK last fall:
It's definitely big, but she will use it again this year. DS2 is on year 3 with his. We started him with a PBK large in K.
I would get a new one and use the extra as a spare. Each of the boys have an old backpack they use when they sleepover at grandparents, for long car travel, at the beach etc.

I vote new! But I wouldn't rush to personalize it unless it's just initials. Many schools discourage first names on the outside of backpacks for safety issues.

This. My mom was so shocked and sad when I told her not to personalize things. She's finally gotten over it though.

The stains would make me crazy, so I would get a new one. W will be using the same small PB backpack with initials from last year, but if I was buying new, I would go with large and hope to get another year or two out of it. I would also get a matching lunch box if that's an option.
