Couldn't Congress turn Mueller's investigation independent? I know it's not likely but if Trump uses a recess appointment to go around them, I would think it would piss them off.
Guys, I hate to say it, but we don't want Trump firing Sessions.
I had been operating on the assumption that he'd have to get his new pick Approved by the senate, so there would be a few months before Mueller got fired, and a lot could happen in three months.
But Maddow pointed out last night that Trump can make a recess appointment. That person would get the job until Jan 3, 2019.
Trump is currently considering Giuliani and Ted Cruz for the job.
Sessions is a reprehensible piece of shit. But his firing means we get a bigger reprehensible piece of shit plus Mueller gets fired.
I fucking hate this administration. Making me root for Jeff fucking Sessions.
I might be crazy but I thought I heard that if a few Dems stick around during recess he can't do an appt. I have no idea where I heard it from. Maybe I dreamed it.

I think if McConnell doesn't gavel them out then Trump can't make a recess appointment. Official Senate business has to occur during that time though. I think we all know McConnell won't do that.

They can technically, but to do that they'd have to pass a law. That Trump would have to sign in effect. So unless 2/3s of them can override Trump's veto, forget it.
Surprise! Paul Ryan is on TV right now saying that he doesn't have any comment on Sessions and that Trump has the power to make personnel decisions.
How that man can live with himself is beyond me.
I'm trying to figure out if Cruz is dumb enough to take the job. I know the Ds are hoping to put up a solid fight against him in 2018, but I would think his senate seat is still safer than being Attorney General, given that Trump doesn't seem to understand that the position doesn't involve being the president's general attorney.

Also, cruz haaaates Trump. I mean he seems to hate everyone but he really hates Trump. so I think having to directly answer to him would just send Cruz over the edge.
Maybe we'll just get a new AG every 6 months or so.

Ted Cruz is an odd choice. I assume Cruz is a fairly safe incumbent but who ever would be appointed to his place might not be given the short amount of time between now and the midterms. Texas is pretty red but I feel like a non-senator might make more sense long term. Maybe Cruz would be a done to the senate to encourage them to go into recess? They might see him as A.G. as a win-win since he's been complicated to work with.
I think there is a 100% chance that 45 tries to fire Mueller one way or another, and soon. He's got a lot of financial crimes in his past to hide, at a minimum, and I don't see any scenario in which he lets this investigation go on much longer. People saying he can't do that just makes him want to do it more. I really can't see a way out of this coming to a head, and all signs point to Congress letting it happen.
It's an odd strategy to keep picking people that would need special elections to fill their spots. I'm all for it, because maybe one of those will flip.
If 45 keeps the pressure on with toilet tweeting sessions and if he doesn't leave 45 is going to fire him. It will enrage him that he is staying put and not leaving making 45 feel weak and Sessions a hero in the media. I still think more is going on that has yet to come out.

I can't see TX flipping in a special election. I think it would be more likely to flip in a regular election when resources are more distributed. I see TX as a swing state in our lifetimes time but not right now. I could be wrong there are several blue folks representing red states.
We all know his tweeting is about Mueller. I bet he is shitting himself knowing that Mueller has or is close to having something big. Or that NYT/WaPo are releasing a big story later this week.
I don't see Cruz doing Trump's bidding, which is clearly what Trump wants. He might have his own fucked up agenda but I don't see him being a Trump lap dog as AG.

Yeah, the knowledge that Mueller has his tax returns and file from FinCEN has sent him over the edge.
The only way I see a way out is if Mueller goes public with a report before the recess.

My unrealistic hope (that will never happen) for if he appoints Cruz, is that Cruz's hatred of Trump will cause him to blow up from the inside. The ultimate fuck YOU. Then he will pride himself as the man who took down Trump and "saves" the Republican Party. And secures himself the nomination.
*note: I don't want him to have the nomination or anything good to happen for him.

Cruz, although an asshole blobfish, is smart. I don't see himself hitching himself to the dumpster fire wagon of this administration, in the hopes that he can keep his nose fairly clean when this all finally goes to shit. He wants to be president, and I think that'll be easier to do from a Senate seat. I do not think he'll take this job. If he does, I will somehow have a negative amount of respect for him, instead of the normal 0.

Dumb question: if he fires Mueller, what happens to all of his (Mueller's) evidence/intel?
If Trump fires Mueller we have bigger problems than the Russia investigation. I mean our country would go into tailspin.
Can you expand on this? What steps would happen? Would it be representatives leading the fight? I just can't see the average person on the street doing anything, maybe I'm underestimating.

Trump is such a terrible person he has a way of making me "root" (I'm using that word loosely) for people who I ALSO think are terrible people (Sessions). I don't want him fired because I don't want someone even worse in his seat who CAN lead the Russia investigation.
I wonder if Sessions is kicking himself for aligning himself with this asshole. Did he really think Trump would be loyal to him?? How can these otherwise arguably smart, experienced politicians think Trump would not eventually turn on them? He turns on everyone!!

I honestly don't know. I assume it gets turned over to the DOJ and archived.
Maybe this is optimistic/naive of me but I think (I hope, I pray...) that the international intel community would step in. I don't for a second believe that Estonia, Ukraine and other nations we collaborate with/who also have lots of dirt on the Trumps will let it go. Their actual countries depend on it.
The Guardian has dropped several expansive and very detailed bombs in the past several months and I don't think their sources are US IC by a long shot.
