Since I entered education as a counselor and have never been in the classroom, I admittedly don't know much about common core and was never trained on various curriculums so I've been trying to search out the information. I'd rather hear it from actual educators though.
I'm at the high school level, so what is the difference between common core and the previous curriculum?
It's just a set of standards. I think the bigger issue would be to understand your district's curriculum so that you can see their method of teaching it. I think people have made these standards seem outrageous or scary, but they really aren't.

Gotcha.
Yeah, every parent I speak to usually freaks out about it but I've never seen the real issue. But I also don't have a lot of background info about CC.

So a lot of the push back comes from the way math is taught now.
You'll hear a lot of people in our generation complain about how math now is sooo complication and why can't we go back to the way it was. Also, they teach a lot using story problems and having to explain the work/process, so someone who is not a strong reader will get a double jeopardy.
However, since we are teaching math in a different way, kids who struggled with the traditional way are now able to grapple with the material in ways people of our generation were not. It's always good to have multiple entry points, so the idea of teaching all the standards with one method is not ideal.
It's not all bad, but it's implementation was/is horrible.
