I am so sick of my hair I could hurl. It's very straight, pretty much all one length (I had bangs but they have grown out), and a dark blond/light brown color. I have highlights, and I've had them forever. I'm just sick of everything about my hair... the style, the color, the texture. Blah.
How do do you decide how to make a drastic hair change? I'm even toying with the idea of using Madison Reed and coloring it myself. Has anyone done their own color? How do you find a new haircut? My hair person never seems to have any ideas for me, so the easy route of asking her is out. And is there any way to get waves for straight hair that don't take a long time?
I go on Pinterest and search for styles, pin a bunch, show them to my hairdresser, and she typically helps talk me off the ledge of doing anything TOO crazy. I tend to lean towards "Chop it all off, make the red really vibrant and spend tons of money!!" Which she then tones back to something more realistic. I have zero emotional attachment to my hair and get really impulsive with it when left to my own devices.
I recently tried to do that style of messy waves on a bob - like the Lauren Conrad thing. My hair is too straight and I gave up after a week of frustrating mornings with a curling iron. So if your hair is super straight, I wouldn't bother. Just work with what you've got!
As for coloring it yourself, not worth it. Just pay a professional. Whenever I've tried that I've regretted it, especially when it was a major change and not just trying to touch something up.
ITA with twinmomma that it's not worth doing color yourself. I would find a highly recommended stylist and make an appointment for cut and color, and get their opinion on what styles and color would look good on you.
mommyatty, go short with me. I will be chopping it pretty short in advance of DD's upcoming "haircut."
I am the opposite of twinmomma, I am hugely attached to my hair and worried about ruining my life.
I've colored my own hair in the past. It's NBD, but I'd rather just pay someone to do it than risk it now that I have the disposable income. (I don't color my hair at all anymore though..)
k3am, mommyatty, Short hair is super fun! It's the most freeing feeling - and it's a good excuse to buy a bunch of dangly, awesome earrings that you can show off more easily.
twinmomma, I was just introduced to the world of undercuts. I'm not sure if it would be a good fit with my hair, but I like the way they look on other people. I'll be taking in a couple pictures as inspiration.

I go on Pinterest and look for ideas I like. Then have a pro make it happen. If your lady is boring get recs and try someone new. If your lady is good, then tell her how you feel, some ideas of what you like, and see what she thinks. I think stylists are hesitant to do too much because they done want you to hate it but if you say how bored you are, maybe they'll be adventurous.

And I really like the lobs with very straight hair- long bobs just sitting on your shoulder or collarbone. Sandra bullock and Julianne Hough have had good ones.
You could do a perm to get waves but it's tricky to get it right and not frizzy.
I did pink highlights last year. The first week it was dark pink but it slowly fades out. My hairdresser said pink and purple (most wild colors) can only be done in semi permanent. My hairdresser is pretty awesome. I tell her I want something different she will try it. I decided earlier this year to go from my natural dirty blonde to a reddish brown (auburn). It looks amazing. I went on Pinterest to find ideas and sent it to my hairdresser and she knew exactly what to do.
mommyatty, I just want to commiserate on hair. Mine is also straight, pretty much all one length (I do have a slight angle from the back to front), and I also have grown-out bangs. I also have highlights and low-lights to add some dimension to my natural boring brown. My hair has no volume, doesn't hold a style, and I look awful with short hair.
Thanks to others for the suggestion to look at hairstyles on Pinterest. I'm definitely going to do that!
If you want to experiment with something fun like pink or purple, you could also just add in some extensions for streaks. They're super easy to maintain and blend in pretty well. And, if you hate it, just go back and have the stylist pop them out!
twinmomma, that's one of the pics I have bookmarked as inspiration.
Everyone with short hair seems to wear... a LOT of make up. Is it just because it's the internet, or something that happens in real life too?
Also, the haircut would be basically for DD. Who today told me that she loves my long hair and to never, ever cut it. We'll see what she says when she finds out some/all of her hair is going too.

My sister has been doing highlights in a color the last few months. The first time she did purple and the highlights were on the under part of her hair and I didn't even notice until our stylist asked me if I wanted the highlights also (we have the same stylist).
This last time she did blue and you can see it. I love them but I'm pretty sure my boss would be like....K no.

I told my hairstylist last week that I was getting divorced (my only public disclosure so far). She laughed and told me I wouldn't be allowed to do anything drastic at my next visit. I love her...
k3am, I don't wear a lot of makeup and have short hair. I do wear a lot of giant earrings. So I vote "that's the internet" not real life.
I agree. I have a textured, slightly angled bob. I wear minimal makeup. I am also pretty lazy about earrings and wear studs most of time.
Keeping my hair this way helps me look polished for work. It is much easier to style and dry in the AM compared to my long hair. Wearing my hair long makes me look messy and frumpy.
