Because an open letter wasn't enough for me today...
My director came back from a meeting with another director and VP in our functional area (HR). The other director was going on and on about how our labor costs in one area outpace earnings of that business, so we're paying too much. So my director clarified that according to market, our pay range is appropriate, although employees in that job tend to be paid higher because they are coming from another higher-paying job but not getting a pay cut to reflect the difference in the pay range and lower responsibilities. So the other director says, well shouldn't we have a policy around reducing pay when someone moves to a lower-level job? My director said he was dumb-founded by that question, because we do clearly have that written in an HR policy (that has been around for years), but no one ever abides by it. The other director who was in the meeting is a total dumba$$. I really don't know how she got promoted into that role. My department is told not to be "policy police", but then when things come up like this, we're asked why we aren't enforcing policy. WTF.
Rumor has it the best thing you can do in my company is be a director and get demoted. They let you keep the salary, you just have to give back some of the benefits.

Might be lazy, but I could get down with that in my own life. I'd love to keep my salary and hand over a chunk of my responsibility.
But I'm stuck being a worker bee. So, I don't think the glamorous demotion life will ever present itself to me.
