This happened to me. Well, not exactly but something similar. I just couldn't transfer books onto my Nook anymore wirelessly. If I plugged the nook into the computer I could transfer that way. Eventually I just upgraded. I find I need to get a new e-reader every three years or so. Mine will just stop working.

I struggled with this and gave up on library loans for a long time because of it. Recently, I downloaded the Kindle app to my iPad and use that instead. Not ideal, but swearing at my Nook was not productive! DH tried to help me (I had assumed it was my luddite ways that prevented me from doing this) and also found it frustrating that Nook has not fixed this known problem with their device.
I know this is not helpful - but I wanted to say that I understand!

How did you transfer books wirelessly?
Honestly I don't remember. Helpful, I know, but this was 7 years ago. I know I used the USB cord to plug the Nook into my computer. Then from there I could access the book on my computer and transfer it to the Nook. But downloading it directly to the Nook wouldn't work.
I don't have a Nook so this may be no help at all, but I know with my Kindle when I want to download a library book I have to log in through my Amazon account and my library. They add an extra step, I think, because they want to make it harder to borrow than buy. Is there something similar with B&N and library books?

The way my library always had me do it per instructions on their website was to download the book into Adobe Digital Editions and then transfer it to my nook.
I find that I am mostly able to transfer older titles and the error I get is on newish more popular stuff. Like Six of Crows didn't work but The Twelve did.
I had constant issues with my nook and library books. It was such a hassle to do them and sometimes Had issues with ADE and saying unauthorized device. The last time I upgraded my nook device to the newest model (couple years ago) you couldn't even get library books because B&N released the device even though there was a known issue. I returned it and got a kindle. I am so much happier!!
I know that doesn't help you with the immediate problem but you did mention in your post about if you need to upgrade your nook. My suggestion is if you are thinking of upgrading and plan to use library books, switch to kindle. The whole reason I got a nook to begin with was the kindle didn't do library books back then. Somehow B&N completely made a mess of this ability and let kindle surpass them. The kindle is just SO much easier.
My 1st generation nook worked better with library books than my simple touch glowlight does. I find myself reading on my phone because I can never figure out how to get the library books on my nook. My 1st generation used to show up in my digital editions when I plugged it in and I could just drag books over to it. It was awesome. My glowlight doesn't do that. It doesn't show up at all when I plug it in. I googled some round about way to get them on my nook and was successful with it but now I can't remember how I did it. I need to look it up again. I wish it wasn't such a hassle. I really like the glowlight but damn...I don't have time to mess around with that crap.

I'm going to look into either upgrading my nook or getting a kindle. I'll probably wait until black Friday because IIRC they usually have some deals then.

I had pretty much this exact same experience. I chose nook over kindle because of the borrowing feature. I started with an original nook and upgraded to a nook simple touch with glow light 2 years later when the battery on my original nook didn't hold a charge for a day anymore. I used my simple touch every day for 3 years and 95% of what I read were ebooks borrowed from my library. Then I started having trouble transferring books over. I got so incredibly frustrated and would complain every day to my husband that I didn't understand why Amazon could transfer everything without wires and the adobe system that was being such a jerk to me. I ended up switching to a kindle and I don't regret it at all. I like it so much better! The light is better, I've had no issues borrowing books, and some of the books even have this feature with Alexa where it will pick up on audible and read the audiobook to me and remember where I left off. Ah-mazing! Not helpful to solve your issue but something to think about as you consider upgrading.

Oh yes the light is better! And the screen. I had 2 nook glow lights get scratches in the screen. I was able to get the one replaced within warranty but not the other. With the way the light is the scratches are like glowing holes and annoying. I've not had any issues with scratches on my kindle.
With that and the ease of library books I'm pretty much a complete convert.

Update on this. B&N posted an ad for the new nook and I commented that I would consider upgrading to this if it didn't have the same issues with getting library books on my current nook. Somebody commented with a solution.
Download to ADE but instead of transferring it to your nook through ADE you need to go to where the file is saved and manually transfer it to your nook.
I’m glad you found a fix, but that’s the main reason I switched from nook to kindle. Being able to borrow library books wirelessly is the best. It makes me happy every time I use it. So I ditto pp’s I’m getting a kindle next time.
Ds2 did scratch/crack my screen and it’s annoying but not enough for me to replace it. Yet.
